THE only thing constant is change. However, the change brought through demoralisation affects society and nationhood. Demoralisation refers to the declining moral and ethical standards of society that have prevailed in Pakistan since independence.
Social deterioration begins from the top. When the leaders are morally corrupt, the masses lose their faith in nationhood. The second phase of moral degeneration comprises nepotism, bribery, and corruption, which offer an easier way to one’s materialistic goals. Corruption and dishonesty gain social acceptance and become normalised to the extent that honest people are perceived as fools.
Today, we feel pride in violating laws. Those squashing the queues are considered powerful. The pursuit of materialistic greed is considered a positive trait. High crime rate, the falling standard of education, and the prevailing level of politics being exercised in the country are clear manifestations of moral degeneration.
