KARACHI: Pakistan social workers have mourned the death of Miss Helen Keller, a leading figure in the world of handicapped people, who died in the United States on Saturday [June 1] at the age of 88. Haji Hassanali P. Ebrahim, President of the Society for the Prevention and Cure of Blindness, said Miss Keller was a world citizen and she had rendered yeoman’s services to the blind, propagating that two-thirds of blindness could be prevented or cured if proper treatment at proper time is given.

Begum Tayabii, President of the National Federation of the Blind and Adult Blind Centre Karachi, recalled the visit to Karachi of Miss Helen Keller in May 1955 “as wonderful experience for all of us” and her contribution in the welfare of blind and dumb.

Begum Nargis Jevanjee, Honorary General Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind, said she was a great woman who gave vision to many a blind and hearing to many a deaf. “She has lit the path for all those who have the welfare and well-being of the blind, deaf and dumb at heart. Her spirit will always remain with us. We shall never forget her,” Begum Jevanjee said.
