Amir Khan announces Super Boxing League in Pakistan

British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan announced the formation of the Super Boxing League in a press conference at the Amir Khan Boxing Academy in Islamabad on Monday.

"I have taken the idea from my partner who is from India. He formed this league in India, so I decided to bring the league here to Pakistan," Khan, who had also expressed a desire to stage the league earlier this year.

Khan said that eight teams, also including women boxers, from across Pakistan would participate in the league which will hold fights under the World Boxing Council.

The purpose of the league, expected to be held in December 2017 or January 2018, is to highlight boxing talent in Pakistan, he said.

Khan also spent time training with local boxers at the academy on the occasion.

'Mohammad Ali of Pakistan'

"Amir Khan is Pakistan's Mohammad Ali," said British High Commissioner Thomas Drew, who was also visiting the academy on Monday. "He is Pakistan's ambassador in in Britain and a British ambassador in Pakistan."

He said that he wanted international cricket to come back to Pakistan and wished that the English side visits the country soon, vowing to support revival of sports in Pakistan.

One small step towards his personal rehabilitation and giving something back; importantly a step in the right direction for Amir... as i believe pakistan has a lot of raw talent and should model its boxing factory on Cuba where its more about talent, motivation, tough grit and determination to succeed rather than the latest facilitaties or equipment.

Thumb's up man. Its win-win for u and for Pakistan. U will be retiring soon and there's nothing more lucrative than opening boxing league. Other hand, Pakistan will get chance to show its talent. And if u succeed bringing English cricket team to Pakistan that will be huge service.

you are starting out from Islamabad that will basically for rich class of Pakistan. Make sure you have a plan to build facilities in poor areas and this is where you will most likely find raw boxing talent. I can imagine lots of money can be made here so corrupt politicians and minister will benefit the most in Pakistan. Good start though

It's a good move. Since Indian sports league bar the participation of Pakistani players starting a own league is a good choice. However as a business perspective what is the ROI for such non cricket leagues and popularity of other sports in Pakistan.
