Minister expects increase in defence exports

KARACHI: Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer has expressed the hope that Ideas-2014 will help increase exports of Pakistani defence products.

Talking to delegates from around the world on the sidelines of Ideas-2014 at Expo Centre here on Wednesday, he said Pakistan had received a very good response at the exhibition.

He said Russian participation in the event was significant. “We are optimistic about cooperation between Pakistan and Russia.”

The delegates from China, Qatar, Turkey, Korea, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Sudan called on the minister.

Mr Tanveer said over 50 countries took part in the exhibition and described it as a great achievement. Pakistan’s defence exports had doubled in a year, thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment being manufactured by the country’s defence industry, he said.

The minister welcomed joint ventures and signing of agreements with various countries and stressed the need for greater cooperation in defence industry products.

Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, Chief of the Air Staff, PAF, visited different stalls at the exhibition.

The Corps Commander, Karachi, Naveed Mukhtar, also visited the exhibition. “It is an... honour to welcome foreign companies to showcase their defence products,” he said.

Around 256 foreign companies and 77 Pakistani firms have put their products on display.

IDEAS is a forum where Pakistan is overwhelmingly involved in show casing its defensive machines and wartime weapons. Its a great forum for making Pakistan's defense equipments and its capabilities in manufacturing the products worth-noting to the international community. The platform has already acquired the status of number one Asian defense exhibition.

IDEAS is a very good platform to meet potential collaborators and customers, giving everyone access to the international market as well as sharing of knowledge and exposure of the capabilities of the defence industry of Pakistan. IDEAS has helped us reach out to potential customers who were previously unaware of the competency of our products. This is definitely a mutually beneficial platform.

Still we have to invest in indigenous defense Industry. Western powers particularly US and Russia make billions of dollars by exporting arms and ironically we are dependent on them. We purchase weapons by spending billions of dollars. We need to develop indigenous arms developing factories to meet new challenges.

Since 2000 Pakistans defence industry has been holding annual exhibitions under the auspices of the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS 2000, 2002 and 2004). The IDEAS arms for peace, as its theme, reflects Pakistans desire to promote peace and stability not only within the region but also elsewhere in the world.
