Sharjeel lambasts Nawaz govt over Karachi attack handling

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon came down hard on the federal government saying the Nawaz administration failed to act when the attack on Karachi was taking place, DawnNews reported.

"The airport in Karachi came under attack on Sunday but Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar failed to react with enough immediacy," Memon said, adding that it was the country's army and security institutions that in fact saved the day.

Memon, who is part of Sindh's provincial cabinet, alleged that the federal government’s reaction to the latest attack on Karachi was cowardly at best.

He added that a search operation was underway in Karachi's Pehlwan Goth and the areas surrounding that locality.

Pehlwan Goth, located in the vicinity of Gulistan-i-Johar, is widely considered as a hub of criminal activities.

The police and Rangers conducted several raids in the area when Karachi witnessed a sudden rise in targeted killings in 2011.

Isn't Karachi in Sindh provice? What about the Chief Minister? does minister consider him to be off the hook and have no responsibility? Or is it that the minister is trying to be opportunistic?

O come on Sharjeel! What has the Sindh Government done for improving the security situation in the country. Had the Sindh Police been better at its job, criminal elements would not have had the chance to take refuge in Karachi. So please, just take a look in the mirror before pointing fingers.

Well I am not Sindh government fan, and feel Shirjeel Mamon and Sindh CM much less than average IQ people. But I do believe Taliban get safe haven in Punjab, and both local and federal government cannot do anything about it. Remember, CM Punjab requested Taliban to spare Punjab, meaning they have license to do whatever in rest of the country.

To educate all the commentators who are not agreeing with Sharjeel Memon, I am also not fond of Sindh government's performance but to his point, Airport administration and security is under Federal government's jurisdiction managed by federal ministry of defense and as such protected by ASF and not by the Sindh Police.

A complete and utter failure of country intelligence apparatus - they need to set their priorities right. You have only two options: either completely annihilate them i.e. killing 1m+ citizens or negotiate a deal and transform these misguided, ill-educated and unemployed rejects of society. Question is - are we capable of either of the option? I'm not so sure!!

As usual blaming each other. Sharjeel Memon talks a lot and does nothing. Its time for Chief Minister to retire - he is old and tired and has problem even thinking and talking. PMLN has not delivered anthing since coming to power. The whole world is saying that we are on our way to become a failed state?

Sharjeel Memon is right. A security Analyst I was talking to in Pakistan says that although he never had much confidence in the ability of ASF, the first responders, but he says he must admit that they did an extraordinary job in containing them till the other troops arrived. Had they not been contained the disaster would have been immense.

Our Information Minister proved one thing - that our politicians are good at at least one thing - blame game! Instead of taking responsibility, he is quick to blame the federal government. While I am no fan of Nawaz Sharif, I think all government officials need to take the responsibility and ensure they are prepared for the future. Blaming someone else will not protect us in the future!
