SIALKOT A football factory based in the Sialkot district jail has been lying closed for the last five years.

According to some reports, the factory was closed down after a tragedy in July 2003, in which as many as four civil judges and five prisoners were killed during a shootout.

Earlier, the workforce of the factory comprised prisoners captured within Sialkot district.

Meanwhile, the plan of shifting the over crowded ancient Sialkot district jail to the outskirts of city still remains in doldrums.

According to official sources, after the jail tragedy the provincial and district governments had planned to establish a new jail on main the Sialkot-Pasrur Road near Model Town number two and to shift the Sialkot jail this new location.

However, the plan is yet to materialise as no development has been made in this project five years on from the tragedy.

According to a jail official, the jail remains overcrowded as more than 2,736 prisoners are housed in the prison against the total capacity of 662 prisoners.
