In the Himalayan region of Tibet and Nepal, it is called 'Yeti' and also Meh-Teh, around some parts of the area. However, very commonly it is called as 'Bigfoot' throughout the world.
Though this cryptic has been a mythological creature for many centuries throughout the world, Bigfoot, also known as the 'Abominable Snowman', became popular in the Western world in the 19th century.
Even though this hairy and huge creature, which can be compared to a half human and half ape, has been sighted several times by recognised and respected historians, lack of solid proof prevents scientists from accepting its existence, leaving it to join the list of other such legendary creatures of crypto-zoology.
To some people, Bigfoot is said to be an herbivore (animal that feeds on plants), makes strange but low sounds and has a very bad odour, probably because it is believed to live in swamps. There are many names given to it, some of them and their translations are Mah-Teh for 'Man-bear'; Dzu-Teh for 'Cattle bear'; Migoi for 'Wild man'; Kang Admi for 'Snow man' and finally JoBran for 'Man-eater'.
The 'Abominable Snowman' was the term referred to it in 1921, the year when the Alpine Club and Royal Geographical Society led the joint 'Everest Reconnaissance Expedition', in which Lieutenant Charles Howard Bury wrote that at the height of 21,000 feet during their expedition, they found footprints as of a wolf but on closer examination they observed that they were sets of two footprints of a very large human. The local guide at once told them that they were made by 'The Wild Man of the Snows'.
Then in 1925, a photographer for the Royal Geographical Society wrote that he saw a strange creature at the Zemu Glacier, which is at about 15,000 feet. It was at a distance of about 200 to 300 yards and “Unquestionably, the figure in outline was exactly like a human being, walking upright and stopping occasionally to pull at some dwarf rhododendron bushes. It showed up dark against the snow, and as far as I could make out, it wore no clothes”. A couple of hours later he came down to the mountain with his team and saw footprints that were “Similar to those of a man, but only six to seven inches long and four inches wide. The prints were undoubtedly those of a biped.”
Moreover, Joshua Gates, the presenter of television series, Destination Truth, found a series of footprints in Nepal in Mount Everest region, resembling those described as Yeti's, measuring 13 inches long and 9.8 inches across. When the footprints were examined by an expert at the Idaho State University, they were reported to be real and not fake. Parts of North America constantly report Bigfoot sightings with footprints up to 16 inches long. There are numerous reports from North Carolina and at least a 100 reported sightings from Michigan alone.
The question remains though, why no one has been able to capture one yet or at least has found satisfactory physical evidence?
According to Native American tribes, the creature is very much aware that it is being watched; it is not as ordinary as people think. It is a highly intelligent being who comes to warn mankind to take better care of its surroundings and nature. Some even believe they are inter-dimensional creatures, able to crossover from their world into ours. But while research and sightings do go on, the internet has done a lot of good to Bigfoot research, say enthusiasts, who can now match or report sightings and stories from all over the globe of this elusive creature that still remains a mystery.
