Prisoner shot dead

PESHAWAR, May 15: An under-trial prisoner was shot dead inside the Judicial Complex Peshawar on Tuesday.

An official of the East Cantonment police station said the deceased Nasrullah Khan had been brought from the Peshawar Central Prison to the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Jangir Khan.

An accused, Kamran, opened fire with his pistol on the hand-cuffed inmate who got serious injuries.

He was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital but could not survive.

The police arrested the attacker with the weapon. The deceased was jailed for murdering his father. Both the men belonged to Badbher. —Bureau Report

NAB initiates probe

PESHAWAR, May 15: The National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has initiated an inquiry against the officials of a firm, Xpert Business Consultants, on charges of cheating public.

The accused persons, on the pretext of providing loans and other services, had obtained advance money from people for ‘making files and insurance policy’. They had also issued cheques to the people, which were dishonoured by the banks.

An FIR was lodged at the University Town police station against the accused persons. —Bureau Report

Man kills brother

SWABI, May 15: A man shot dead his brother over a piece of land in Tarakai village on Tuesday, said the police.

Registering FIR in Kalu Khan police station, father of the two brothers, said Sartaj Khan shot dead Ziad Khan with a Kalashnikov over a dispute on a piece of land. He said Sartaj escaped after the incident.

SHO of Kalu Khan police station told this correspondent they raided various areas and houses of his relatives to arrest the accused but he dodged the police. —Correspondent

Universities sign MoU

MARDAN, May 15: The Abdul Wali Khan University and the Durham University of UK on Tuesday signed an MoU to encourage contact and cooperation between faculty members, departments and research centres of the two varsities.

The MoU was signed by acting voice-chancellor of AWKUM Prof Dr Saeed Anwar and Ms Sharne Procter, Director of the Durham University, at a ceremony, according to the varsity officials.

Earlier, Ms Sharne Procter was briefed about different developments that had taken place since the establishment of the university three years ago. She also interviewed faculty members of the Abdul Wali Khan University who had applied for the foreign PhD scholarship programme for the year 2012.

Escaped prisoners data

PESHAWAR, May 15: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has requested the federal government to direct the National Database and Registration Authority to provide data about the prisoners escaped from the Bannu jail.

The home and tribal affairs department, in a statement on Tuesday, said a list of escaped prisoners was sent to the Nadra GM in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa some three weeks ago to provide the CNIC numbers and photographs in soft and hard copies to help the intelligence agencies re-arrest the escapees.

However, when no response was received from the GM Nadra despite frequent reminders, the provincial government approached the federal government. —Bureau Report
