KARACHI: Akbar Badshah and Mohammad Rizwan struck fine centuries to help Peshawar reach a position of strength against Karachi Whites on the second day of their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship Division II match at the National Stadium here on Friday.

Skipper Akbar continued his sublime touch with 113, while Rizwan, the wicket-keeper/batsman, completed his maiden first-class century after the visitors resumed at 241-5. The sixth-wicket partnership between them produced 213 in 273 minutes as Peshawar amassed 440 in their first innings.

Akbar laced his 301-ball knock in 376 minutes with 11 fours and one six, while Rizwan was more enterprising as he slammed 13 fours and a brace of sixes in his 267-ball innings lasting 331 minutes. Sajjad Ahmed made a useful 54-ball 43 with the aid of six fours and a six.

Karachi Whites, who are third in the Division II standings behind Peshawar and SNGPL, then stumbled to 46-2 at close of play.

SNGPL earned a 32-run lead after Quetta restricted them to 231 all out at the Gaddafi Stadium. But it wasn’t plain sailing for SNGPL who were in deep trouble at 88-7 before No 9 Bilawal Bhatti rescued them by blasting 100 from 74 deliveries with the aid of 12 fours and four sixes.

Yasir Shah, the leg-spinner who had earlier taken 5-48, also played a vital innings of 40 and helped Bilawal add 137 for the eighth wicket.

United Bank staged a dramatic comeback against KRL at the LCCA Ground. After being dismissed for 121, the bankers bowled out KRL for 94 with veteran all-rounder Tahir Mughal returning figures of six for 36 in 18 overs and ex-Pakistan paceman Shabbir Ahmed 3-51.

But United Bank then surrendered that advantage by making only 136 in their second innings with Rahat Ali picking up 5-45 to bag nine for 78 in the match.

KRL, needing 164 for victory, were 4-0 at draw of stumps.

Usman Salahuddin scored a superlative 132 (267 balls, eight boundaries) as Lahore Ravi took full control of the proceedings against Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad. The Ravians made 333 before dismissing their hosts for 139. Forced to bat again, Hyderabad reached 18-1.

Fahad-ul-Haq played a captain’s knock to help Lahore Shalimar take 35-run lead on the first innings against Multan at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Fahad finished unbeaten on 92 (119 balls, 11 fours) as Shalimar scored 145 after resuming at 89-7.Multan then ran into further trouble as they were 46-4 at close of play.
