LAHORE, Mar 31: Fancied horse, Baba Gee put up a scintillating display of speed to storm home an easy winner in the feature event during the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Thursday.

The even-money favourite unknown chestnut was third behind bay horse Compromise and the mare, Mano in the initial stages of the 1000 metres race and when the heads turned towards the straight he flashed past the front-runners pack to win to his liking.Piloted by the riding boy S. A. Qaisar and trained by Mohammad Hanif, Baba Gee beat Compromise by about five lengths with Mano and Zunair Prince to complete the frame among a dozen opponents.

The victory of Baba Gee gave S. A. Qaiser a well deserved treble when earlier he had brought in Victory Shine and Red Eye to win the first and third race, respectively. Whereas Qaisar stole the limelight of the day’s racing he failed to show a similar horsemanship on his mount Pocket Money in the fifth and supporting event finishing off the frame.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards have taken to task jockey Naseer Ahmad handing over to him a two-month suspension for pulling his mount, the favourite horse Alpine Creek in the last race on Sunday.

Prominent race-horse owner Mahmood Khan talking to Dawn said the suspension though meager, still augur’s well in the interest of fair racing. He said the dare-devil jockey, who had remained under suspension for most of the time during the season did not allow his mount to take a level start and then strode him to finish a calculative fourth.

The punishment would go a long way to restore lost confidence of punters, who hope similar prompt actions in such cases in future too.
