TIMERGARA, Feb 10: The Adenzai Qaumi jirga has decided to mobilise people of Dir district against an expected military operation in the area to save it from Swat and Bajaur-like situation, sources say.

The decision was made during an urgently called meeting of the jirga in Chakdara on Tuesday with its chairman and former provincial minister Bakht Baidar Khan in the chair.

According to sources Timergara tehsil nazim Mohammad Umar, Sultanat Yar, Advocate Rahimullah and Madad Khan of JI, Zar Nasib Khan and Maulana Gul Rahim of JUI, Abdur Rahman Khan of ANP and Haji Nawab Khan of PPP attended the meeting.

The jirga decided to stage protest rallies at Talash and Timergara against the possible military operation in Malakand and Lower Dir.

It decided to motivate people from all walks of life in the district to avoid military operation in the area. The jirga announced to hold a grand rally in Timergara soon against the possible operation, sources added.

“We believe that military action cannot curb the ongoing wave of militancy as it was proved in Swat,” members of the jirga said. The jirga also asked Taliban leadership to contact it before carrying out any activity in the area so that a clash between the locals and Taliban could be avoided.

LAWYER KIDNAPPED: Another senior lawyer and former president of Timergara District Bar Association was reportedly kidnapped along with his son and personal car by unidentified persons on Tuesday, relatives and police said.

Advocate Sardar Javed Akhtar told Dawn that his father Advocate Sardar Abdul Hakim and his brother Arif were missing since morning, adding that both of them left home for courts in Timergara.

He said since then they had been missing while no one had so far contacted the family. Police registered a case against unidentified kidnappers.

He said that the car they were riding in was too missing. The family had no enmity with any one, he added.

Sardar Abdul Hakim now in his sixties had been a prominent practicing lawyer for the last 35 years. He is also district president of PML -Q and had served as district chairman of the Khidmat Committee in Nawaz Sharif government. He had contested elections for the National Assembly seat, NA-34, several times but could not win the polls.

Earlier on Jan, 24 another senior lawyer A. Jamil had been kidnapped by and his dead body was later found in a square of Timergara on Jan 25.
