KARACHI: The Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) of the police on Friday claimed to have shot dead a suspected carjacker during an alleged encounter on Shaheed Millat Road.

An AVLC spokesperson said a patrolling team signalled an Alto car to stop for checking on the service road leading towards Jail Chowrangi.

Instead of stopping, the suspects in the car allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the police. During the ensuing exchange of fire, one suspect, identified as 32-year-old Saqib Asif, was arrested in a wounded condition. He died while being taken to hospital.

Two other suspects managed to escape from the scene.

Police recovered a car from the suspect’s possession, which had recently been stolen from the jurisdiction of Sharea Faisal police.
