• Officials say strong national narrative is as critical as security measures; special sub-panel to monitor media, prevent propaganda
• Plan calls for promoting patriotism, national unity in schools

GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan Steering Committee on Information emphasised adopting an integrated media strategy to combat terrorism and extremism, stressing that national unity, social harmony and public awareness are as critical as security measures.

The decision was made during a meeting at the Information Directorate in Gilgit, chaired by GB caretaker Information Minister Ghulam Abbas. Attendees included representatives from the GB Information Department, educational institutions, PEFTalk, ISPR, Radio Pakistan, PTV and other relevant institutions.

“Combating terrorism is not possible only through security measures,” Mr Abbas said. “A strong national narrative is indispensable, which is based on national unity, social harmony and public awareness.”

The committee decided that practical steps will be taken to promote patriotism and national unity in educational institutions. A special sub-committee will also be established to monitor social and electronic media and prevent anti-state propaganda.

To create a more comprehensive strategy, it was decided to include the Health Department, Police, and the Law and Prosecution department in the next meeting.

The committee also agreed to increase the organisation of sports and cultural activities through public-private partnerships, viewing them as effective means of promoting peace, solidarity and social harmony.

A WhatsApp group will be established for effective communication among the participants, who expressed their determination to intensify joint efforts to promote a positive narrative.
