GILGIT: A special screening of Hundan — An Echo of a Dirge, Pakistan’s official selection for the 2026 Academy Awards and one of the first-ever films produced in the Burushaski language, brought senior citizens from Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country together in the federal capital.

The event, organised by the Aga Khan Social Welfare Board and Rockwood Produ­ctions, was held at Arena Cinema, Bahria Town, Phase 4.

The screening brought together elders from the Burushaski-speaking community, along with many attendees who do not speak the language, but joined in marking what participants described as a historic cultural milestone.

The film is based on cherished folklore, passed down for generations through oral traditions. The stories have often been narrated by elders as bedtime stories and lullabies.

For many senior citizens present, watching a story they once heard from their own elders come alive on the big screen was an emotional experience.

Participants expressed gratitude to the organisers and sponsors for honouring senior members of the community and promoting indigenous language and culture.

Several described the event as a meaningful step toward preserving Burushaski heritage for future generations.

Speaking at the screening, director Karamat Ali thanked the elders for attending and acknowledged their role in preserving the oral traditions that inspired the film.

“We are grateful to our elders, who have safeguarded these stories for generations,” Ali said. “This film is a tribute to their wisdom and to the richness of our cultural heritage.”

Senior citizens shared their pride in witnessing their folklore presented in cinematic form, saying the moment underscored the importance of safeguarding indigenous narratives in a rapidly changing world.
