PESHAWAR: Qaumi Watan Party and Awami National Party on Friday expressed sorrow over the widespread destruction caused by the flash floods in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and urged the federal and provincial governments to compensate the families of those who died or injured in the deluge.
In separate statements issued here, QWP chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao and ANP provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain said torrential rains and cloudbursts triggered floods in various districts, resulting in loss of precious lives as well as destruction of hundreds of houses and other assets.
Expressing solidarity with the victims, Mr Sherpao said QWP’s sympathies were with the affected families. He directed party leaders and workers to extend all possible assistance to the flood and rain-hit people.
He lamented that despite the recurring devastation caused by floods every year, the authorities restricted themselves to temporary measures instead of adopting a comprehensive and preventive strategy.
The QWP chief urged the provincial government and relevant departments to immediately launch relief operations, ensure the rehabilitation of the flood-hit people, and rescue those stranded.
Similarly, ANP central president Senator Animal Wali Khan also expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods.
In a statement, he said during this difficult time, the entire nation stood in solidarity with the affected families, who have lost their loved ones or seen their homes and livelihoods destroyed. He paid tributes to the five personnel martyred in the helicopter crash.
He urged the public to come forward and support their brothers and sisters in this hour of need.
Aimal Wali instructed the Khudai Khidmatgar volunteers to immediately reach the affected areas and participate in relief activities.
ANP’s Mian Iftikhar also expressed sorrow over the devastating floods in Swat, Bajaur, Buner, Shangla, Hazara division, and other districts, and asked the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to take immediate steps for helping the affected people.
He said the natural disaster had brought severe hardship to thousands of ‘our brothers and sisters’, resulting in loss of homes, livelihoods, and precious human lives.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
Mian Iftikhar demanded of the federal and provincial governments to take immediate and effective measures for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation in the flood-hit areas, ensuring the provision of food, medicines, and clean drinking water to the marooned population.
He urged the government to conduct a transparent survey to assess damage and provide immediate compensation to the affected families.
The ANP provincial chief instructed the Khudai Khidmatgar volunteers to reach the affected areas without delay.
