MONSOON CASUALTIES: This refers to the report ‘10 killed as downpour inundates Punjab cities’ (June 27). Due to climate change, unprecedented rainfalls have become the new norm, putting the country’s infrastructure under increasing burden. Every year, several people lose their lives in rain-related incidents in Lahore and elsewhere. Faulty power lines and exposed wires often lead to electrocution. In underdeveloped areas, rainwater causes short circuits and sparks, resulting in fatal accidents. These cases reflect the consistent failure of the authorities.

WATER CRISIS: For the last more than two months, there has been no water supply in Karachi’s Shabbirabad area. The residents are forced to purchase water through private tankers at three times the official rates. Repeated complaints lodged with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) have remained unanswered. This is not just failure; it is clear complicity of the officials with the water tanker mafia. The authorities should restore water supply immediately.

DIESEL PUMPS: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has failed to meet the water needs of Karachi for decades now. The situation is compounded with periodic waterline bursts and electricity breakdowns, resulting in further depletion of water supply that can never be made up. Under these circumstances, which are not likely to get better in the foreseeable future, the KWSC should consider installing diesel pumps as backup to at least cover the power outages.

RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS AAFIA: Now that we have a positive turn in ties with the United States, we need to push for the release of Dr Aafia Siddique, who has been in US detention for years. It is our collective responsibility to raise our voice for her freedom. It is time to end the silence and talk about the issue.
