CHITRAL: A football tournament was held in Drosh town here on Sunday to pay homage to the ‘valiant’ efforts of the security forces to repulse an attack carried out from across the border here on Sept 6, 2023.
Lower Chitral deputy commissioner Mohammad Ali Khan and district police officer Ikramullah Khan gave away shields and prizes to the participating teams and players.
Wing Commander Chitral Scouts Lt-Col Qaiser Raza was also in attendance.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ali, who was the chief guest, paid rich tribute to the personnel of armed forces for repulsing an attack by intruders and inflicting ‘huge’ losses on them.
He said local players had tremendous potential in games of polo, cricket and football, and holding such events would provide them with opportunities to scale up their skills.
All Selectors Sports Club won the final by defeating the Ideal Club Drosh by one goal.
A total of 22 teams participated.
WORKSHOP: Speakers at a consultative workshop on ‘political empowerment of women’ held in Mastuj town suggested different plans to enhance the participation of women in local and national elections by removing the impediments.
Qashqar and Shandur Area Development Organisation organised the workshop.
The organisation’s chairman Syed Saadat Jan and others, including Syed Kausar Ali Shah, Sher Afgan and Shah Wazeer Laal, presented a number of proposals for encouraging participation of women in political process, which was inevitable for sustainable development of the area.
They said though women of Chitral enjoyed a certain degree of political emancipation, still they faced hurdles, impeding their full participation in the election process.
They said the number of polling stations in Chitral needed to be increased to facilitate women.
LAPTOP SCHEME: Under the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme, 114 students of University of Chitral, were given laptops during a ceremony held in the varsity.
Prof Mir Baiz Khan of Toronto University of Canada was the chief guest.
He urged the students to use the facility for useful purposes, including that of seeking online employment and carrying out research in their respective fields of study.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Zahir Shah and focal person of laptop scheme Dr Tajuddin Sharar also spoke.
