SHANGLA: The education department has appointed 70 women teachers to union council schools here to fill vacancies.

The appointments come under the government’s recent policy declaring at least two teachers mandatory for a primary school.

District education officer (female) Parveen Rehman told reporters on Sunday that appointments were made in line with the selection committee’s recommendations following tests and interviews.

She said the department had appointed women teachers to schools with vacancies and one teacher.

Ms Rehman said 83 posts were advertised but only 70 candidates passed the tests and interviews.

She added that the rest of seats would be filled on “open merit” as the posts were the union council-based PST ones.

“Recently, the educated department adapted a policy declaring that each primary school must have two primary teachers. In many cases in the past, a single teacher used to run the entire school but that won’t be the case anymore as every primary school will have at least two teachers,” she said.

The official said Shangla’s terrain was hard, while most of its people lived in remote, mountainous areas, where non-local teachers faced problems.

She said the local teachers would be appointed to those schools.

“I’m hopeful that the appointment of 70 more teachers in Shangla will ensure quality education in primary schools,” she said.

GUTTED: A ‘hut restaurant’ was gutted by a fire in Bisham Kunshi area here on Saturday night.

However, no damage to public life was reported.

The Rescue 1122 fire tenders reached the area an hour after the fire erupted.

The restaurant was destroyed in the incident.
