REDUCING the carbon footprint is one of the biggest challenges for governments across the world. The temperature is rising and glaciers are melting at a fast pace. Heavy rains have caused devastation in most parts of the country. The deadly floods have engulfed villages and cities, causing huge loss of precious lives and property.

Pakistan has become the second most polluted country in the world. While the government has taken some measures to reduce the carbon footprint, it has failed to achieve its target, that is, to mitigate the effects of climate change. Our industries produce a huge quantity of poisonous gases, and motor vehicle emission is the leading cause of the poor quality of air.

The government should think of a sustainable way to control its carbon footprint. Plantation of trees is not enough at the moment. The government needs to focus on spreading awareness and educating people about climate change. In addition, it should encourage the use of bicycles, cloth and paper bags, and waste recycling.

The problem we have created for ourselves can only be solved with active participation of both the government and the people. Not only will this make the country’s future better, but will also create job opportunities for many of the unemployed people and that, in turn, will eventually boost the national economy.
