LAHORE: A man allegedly stabbed and injured a young girl in broad daylight in the presence of several people after she refused to marry him, the Mughalpura police said on Wednesday.

A police official said the suspect intercepted the girl in a crowded bazaar near Jehangir Road and expressed anger after he found out that she had refused his marriage proposal.

Quoting locals, the official said, the suspect, Ghulam Murtaza, holding a knife in one hand proposed to her again, saying that she must fulfil her promise she made to him.

As she told him about her parents’ wish to marry her off to another man, the suspect attacked and injured her seriously. Locals immediately overpowered the suspect and handed him over to police after giving him a thrashing.

Police shifted the injured girl to hospital where she underwent a surgery.

In another incident in Kahna, a shopkeeper was allegedly tortured to death by some locals over a petty issue.

Identified as Fayaz Ahmad (23), the deceased was a resident of Azad Town.

A police official said three locals, including Asad and Bilal, visited the shop of Fayaz to purchase some edibles. When they were asked to pay an outstanding amount, both sides exchanged harsh words that led to a brawl.

The suspects later attacked Fayaz with bricks and injured him critically, the police official said, adding that he was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to the head injuries. The attackers fled from the scene.

Police sent the body to morgue for autopsy after lodging a case against the culprits.
