MULTAN: The activists of Sindhu Bachao Tarla (struggle to save the Indus) collected garbage from the river bank at Taunsa Barrage during a clean-up campaign.

Children, women and men participated in the campaign and collected garbage from in and outside the river.

Fazal-i-Rab Lund, who led the campaign, said that restaurants established on the river bank and their visitors threw garbage in and outside the river that polluted it.

“People usually throw pollutants, including plastic bottles, styrofoam items, ropes, plastic bags, straws, cups and plates, glass bottles and cigarette buds in the river,” he added.

He further said that the purpose of the activity was not only to keep the river clean, but to educate and create awareness about the impact of trash and debris on the environment.

“We want to play our part in conserving the marine ecosystem,” he added. He said the restaurants established on river banks were major producers of the garbage that ended up in the rivers.

“The industrialists are converting this water into poison, which is rapidly damaging the river ecosystem,” Nasir Khan Lund, another participant, said.
