Offline app to help prepare tax returns

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched an application enabling taxpayers to prepare income tax return and wealth statement without using the internet to resolve the connectivity issues they are often confronted with.

An official statement issued that the application will help taxpayers to fill out returns in offline mode. The new government is planning to introduce more facilitation with strict measures to penalise non-compliant taxpayers.

The application called Iris-ADX (Asynchronous Data Exchange) has been prepared by the Information Technology Wing of the FBR.

The application allows the taxpayer/e-intermediary to prepare their statements in offline mode and upload them to the FBR’s repository seamlessly.

Last year, the FBR had received 1.6 million income tax returns. The board is expecting to enhance this figure to 2m in the current fiscal year.

The last date for filing of tax return and statement has been extended till Sept 30.

This is the umpteenth time when FBR has started revising the Tax return or preparing something new for facilitating the Tax Payers. Unfortunately these draft returns are released and preparations almost AFTER the last date for filing of returns. Couldn't they start working from Jan to March, release draft return in April and finalize it by end June so that people can fill and file the latest form of return from July onward?

FBR must also apply innovative aproach/thinking to expand tax net without which it would not be possible to considerably increase tax revenues. A proportion of Lawyers, Doctors, Accountants, Architects and other professionals are earning millions but pay little towards tax. Businesses in towns and cities are doing the same. Big agriculturists and feudal lords pay nothing or very little tax. It's to be noted that the govt has appointed FBR Chairman from DMG group by passing senior FBR officials and tax experts. It remains to be seen whether the chairman would be able to turn things around and introduce meaningful reforms in FBR?

People will willingly pay taxes when they are confident that the money will be spent on their welfare ....... the government needs to first build confidence if results are trquired.

The App is a joke, the only thing it does is to redirect you to the FBR web-page. Massive disappointment.
