Kaneria wants his case reviewed by PCB tribunal

ISLAMABAD: Banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria on Wednesday made a passionate appeal to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to review his case in the three-member tribunal recently formed to probe the Pakistan Super League (PSL) corruption case.

PCB formed the three-member tribunal headed by a retired judge to investigate the spot-fixing case in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) involving opening batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif.

The tribunal will be headed by retired Justice Asghar Haider, who was also the legal advisor to the board in the past, and includes former PCB Chairman Tauqir Zia and former wicketkeeper Wasim Bari.Talking to APP, Kaneria requested the government and PCB’s Patron-in-Chief, Prime minister Nawaz Sharif to urge the board to review his case in front of the above mentioned tribunal. “I am a proud Pakistani and want to serve my country more. Help me in this regard,” he appealed.

It may be mentioned here that Kaneria was banned for life by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in June 2012 for his alleged involvement in foul practices of spot-fixing during the English county cricket season.

According to Kaneria, the ECB has banned him from playing international cricket over some false statements made by his former Essex colleague Mervyn Westfield who was himself convicted over spot-fixing charges.

Very justify request by Danish K, now ball is on the table of PCB chairman Mr. Shyharayar to give him justice and put his case to tribunal. I support Danish.

All players should be given a fair hearing. If Amir can be pardoned for accepting his involvement than Kaneria also needs to get a fair trail.

This boy is suffering, he deserves a chance to prove his innocence & play again to earn his livelihood. Strange no one seems to be is listening to him. Chairman PCB should personally take interest in his case, please give him a chance of fair trial.

No chance for Kaneria as far as PCB is concernd since they have to follow ICC mandate against him. Nevertheless, as suggested earlier in these columns, if Danish Kaneria really thinks that he is in fact innocent and has been wrongly implicated due to false statements made by his ex Essex country teammate, his best bet will be to hire a top attorney and file his appeal in the "International Court of Sport arbitration" based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Kaneria has a very good point. His punishment is completely incomprehensible. He has been convicted by the ECC on the word of another player who was in fact found guilty in the British legal system and jailed. At the same time, the British police said that they did not have sufficient evidence against Kaneria to even bring him to trial. And yet the other player is now free to play County Cricket in England, while Kaneria has been banned. Are we to suppose that the legal standards of the ECC outranked those of the British justice system and the British police?

@Saif Zulfiqar This is complete nonsense. Kaneria actually said that he was not being given support by the PCB because he belonged to a minority community. He has always played probably for Pakistan, and in fact during the Pakistan team's tour of India the Indian press was upset that he went to a temple to pray for Pakistan's victory. I was in India at that time, and can vouch for what was written in the Indian press.

@Imtiaz Mahmood: He is not the one & only player responsible for disgracing cricket besides he has no case of any wrong doing ever recorded in Pakistan. This is not just not to listen to his side of the story. As per the case Danish Kaneria pressurized Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield to become involved in spot-fixing.
