KOHAT: A high school student allegedly committed suicide after failing in the recent secondary school examinations in Junglekhel here on Saturday.

The victim, Rashid Khan, when came to home was snubbed by his father by giving example of his two sisters who passed in every examination.

Annoyed and deeply hurt by the attitude of the family he went to a room and shot himself in the head with pistol.

He died instantly after which his body was taken to KDA hospital for postmortem.

In another case, a boy suffering from epilepsy drowned while taking bath in Tanda Dam lake on Saturday.

Police said that the deceased Farhan drowned after suffering an epilepsy attack while swimming. His body was later recovered by volunteers.

DEATH SENTENCE: A murder convict was awarded death sentence and a fine of Rs100,000 by additional judge Irshad Ahmed Khan on Saturday.

The convict, Rehmat Khan, was also handed over five-year jail term and a fine of Rs60,000 in another attempted murder case by the same court. He had killed Naushad, general councilor from Urban-IV union council, in 2012 over some dispute.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Kohat Jamaluddin Shah warned the oil and gas exploration companies to avoid making promises with the local people about start of welfare work on their own and take the administration into confidence because this practice leads to creating law and order situation.

He also directed the gas authorities to provide the facility in the five kilometres radius of the wells which was constitutional right of the people.

Chairing a meeting at his office on Thursday, Mr Shah said that projects signed by the people with oil companies were not being fulfilled which led to protests and suspension of work.

He said that ultimately the administration was embarrassed and had to intervene to defuse tension in the most sensitive region of Kohat division.

The meeting was attended by DIG Ishtiaq Marwat, Kohat DC Kamran Afridi, Karak DC Shoaib Jadoon, Hangu DC Mujeebur Rehman and representatives of the oil companies.

They discussed means to remove impediments to the development work and advised the companies to employ local people who could prove helpful in identifying solution to the problems in the light of their experience and relationship with tribes.
