Musharraf treason case: AG says early verdict possible

ISLAMABAD: Attorney General Munir A. Malik has said that given the strong evidence available against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, a decision in the treason case against him may be reached very soon.

Speaking to media representatives outside the Supreme Court, Malik did not rule out that Musharraf could be re-arrested in the case during proceedings, adding that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would have the authority to carry out his arrest.

He said that according to Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the retired general could face life imprisonment or death.

Malik added that in the event of Musharraf's arrest, the jurisdiction of the granting him bail would lie with the special court constituted to try the former dictator and that only the president had the power to grant a pardon.

The special court comprising of Justice Faisal Arab (Sindh High Court), Justice Tahira Safdar (Balochistan High Court) and Justice Yawar Ali (Lahore High Court) would try the former army strongman for high treason over the imposition of emergency rule in Nov 2007.

While it is OK to prosecute someone probably responsible for a major crime nevertheless transparency should be visible. Even before the start of the case some are bent upon punishing the accused. There should not be any smell of grudge.

This is laughable. They gov still trying to intimidate P.Musharraf in an attempt to force him out of the country, so that they could label him a coward. They are digging their own grave. I really hope this case goes the distance so that all real traitors could be exposed. Decisions were taken in the best interest of the country, based on advice from all provisional governors and the Prime Minister.

@Masoud: But the grudge in this is unavoidable, because the government, Judiciary, political parties, all have grievances against Musharraf. All politicians are afraid that if Musharraf is freed, they will all be in trouble.

This is vengeance and nothing else. The PPP and PML Nawaz has in their last 4 terms has taken the Country 50 years backward and they amassed huge wealth and gave nothing to the people except unrest and terrorism. Since this Nawaz Government came to power have done nothing except filing cases against Musharraf and even in that nothing was proved and InshaAllah in this case Musharraf will come out clean.

Man is presumed innocent till he is proven guilty , here it is opposite, they are already presuming him guilty. This is no justice right there.

This case is in court, hence it cannot be discussed, does'nt Mr AG Malik not aware of this...the matter is prejudice and in court, hence none can give his/her comment.....

Everyone is focussing on 2007 and no one is looking at 1999 when Mushareff ceased power. At that time, his coup d'etat was approved by the Supreme Court which included amongst others one justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The SC legitimised Mushareff's government and therefore his subsequent tampering of the constitution. To declare an emergency does not by itself constitute treason. If article 6 has been breached, it was in 1999. Therefore all those who collaborated then should be brought in front of the courts including the SC bench that exonnarated him. Oh .. that means the Chief Justice of Pakistan answering some hard questions!!

I hope Musharraf stands up and face it. It looks like he has an army of lawyers, I am sure they will argue to the best, and do a good job, in presenting his case.

Current government as well as previous government put these shows to distract criticism. They have no plan for resource development and stamping out corruption in their ranks. They are afraid that real accountability of their ill gotten wealth will be exposed.
