PESHAWAR: At least 17 people were killed in an explosion in the premises of a local court in Charsadda's Shabqadar area on Monday, hospital sources said.

The Jamatul Ahrar, a splinter group of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack in an email sent to journalists, saying the attack was carried out to avenge the hanging of Mumtaz Qadri, killer of former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.

The blast left at least 30 people injured, while two police personnel and a woman were among the dead.

Official sources at the Shabqadar Hospital told DawnNews they received 13 bodies, while the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar received four.

District Police Officer Sohail Khalid told DawnNews that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

The attacker was intercepted by policemen stationed at the court gate as he was attempting to enter the sessions court premises.

The cops fired at the attacker who detonated his explosives with a loud bang. At least 17 people, including two policemen were killed while 30 others were wounded in the attack.

Eyewitnesses at the site said they heard firing after a loud blast.

The casualties were shifted to Shabqadar Hospital. Hospital administration said they received seven bodies.

At the time of the explosion, the courts were crowded after a break over the weekend.

Some vehicles parked in the vicinity of the blast site caught fire. Efforts are being made to put the fire out.

Security and emergency teams reached the blast site and sealed the area.

Awami National Party (ANP) Zahid Khan, talking to DawnNews after the blast, criticised the provincial government for 'taking inadequate security measures'.

Shabqadar tehsil is close to Mohmand tribal region, which is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in the northwest, where Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants were said to have carved out strongholds.

The incident comes at a time when law-enforcement agencies are said to be making gains in implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and taking counter-terrorism measures across the country.

A total of 2,159 terrorists have been killed and 1,724 arrested, data from the interior ministry showed, since NAP was launched following the TTP-claimed attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar on Dec 16, 2014.

The number of attacks in Pakistan has fallen around 70 per cent, due to a combination of the military offensive against Taliban bases along the Afghan border and government initiatives to tackle militancy, but attacks on security and civilian targets continue to occur occasionally.

Local people dont want peace . Why always peshawar after every 3 to 4 months. Facilitators are real enemy. Master sevurity plan needed. Stop country development road etc go for plan. 1. City cards for everylocal areas in peshwar. 2. Without informing secuitry deparments no one can stay as guest. 3. Local vehicles should be issued special Card to verify time in and out to cities with limited time period stay. 5. Chemical and other inflamable stuff can only be shiped by govrnment cargos. 6. Computarized checkpost in every city. 7. Iran and afghan boarder should be sealed at any cost 8. Stop local people to go for labour work in afghan. 9. Evacuate all afghan other than educated, doctors , engineers. 10. Visa policy for afghan and sponsor or valid reason to come and stay in pak not more than 15 days. 11. There is no terrorism if you are comitted to your work. PAK ARMY ZINDABAAD

OH ! What a tragedy again ! May the Almighty give comfort, solace and strength to bear the losses of loved ones. Enough has been said about how to destroy these violent outfits. Lot has been done, as well by violent response. However, I firmly believe that the governments at all levels must immediately put in action programs for the poor, the illiterate, unemployed, deprived to give them some quick semblance of hope to get out of the rut of poverty. Something of a welfare state. People keep hope and love for the person next door.

There is a great question mark on the role of the security forces. What are they doing for the last 10 years? The terrorists could be having financial support but not in billions as our security forces have. Similarly they could be thousands in number but our security forces are more than a million. How can this mighty military can't defeat a tiny force?

Mar 07, 2016 02:43pm

Operation against militants is successful bcz the blast frequency reduced from daily, weekly to monthly as per interior ministry - bcz non of the victims are relative or belong to those who publish such heartless statistics and news. So they don't care about the people but doing their job to highlight their progress by comparing with previous years daily base causalities due to terrorism to this years. Who cares for the blood of poor , unfortunately Pakistan have plenty of poor and their blood is available for elite to sell it to others.

RIP for the departed souls..@ Khan.. I completely agree with you..lets decide once and for all. The issue of tribal areas ...either be with us and follow the laws of the country , have proper NIC / where about of what you do etc ...else these tribal man can join Afghanistan or become independent ..Their call ..but we must establish proper border and security controls if they are with Pakistan. This is the root-cause of all of Pakistan security problems ....hope the government understands. All efforts are useless until you cut the supply of all this ammunition..fro ANP leader they have not learned anything after being completely rejected by the people of KPK ..still playing politics ..

Zahid Khan of ANP is very correct in his statement that despite good work of the Army in destroying nearly all the basis of terrorist especially Taliban, the Provincial government of PTI has miserably failed in securing the areas in KPK.Reason being nepotism and incompetence. This suicide bomber must have their facilators in KPK as well he travelled from his hiding place to court without detection. The terrorists have been freely allowed to operate in PTI opponents area i.e ANP as the PTI having soft corner for Taliban.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the victims’ friends and families. It is hard to imagine their pain and agony at the moment. We hope that they find the strength to get through this difficult time. We also wish to see the injured make a full and speedy recovery. The terrorists have again struck in their typical cowardly way. Their attempts to destabilize the government continue, and it is sickening to see these terrorists trying to find a way to justify killing innocent people. We stand with the people of Pakistan during this difficult time and hope to see the terrorist group behind this attack completely disbanded. Pakistani security forces are working hard to counter terrorism, and we are hopeful that day isn’t far when peace will prevail throughout the country.
