Gen Raheel visits Kabul, seeks handover of Mullah Fazlullah

ISLAMABAD: On his visit to Kabul on Wednesday, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif sought handover of top Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Mullah Fazalullah who is wanted for terrorism cases in Pakistan.

The army chief shared classified intelligence details with the Afghan officials and revealed to them that the mastermind behind the Peshawar attack, who was from Afghanistan, was giving directives to terrorists.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Afghanistan stands with the people of Pakistan in their hour of grief.

General Raheel also met International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) commander General Joseph Dunford. Dunford condemned the attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar and assured Pakistan of complete cooperation in countering terrorism and in security related matters.

General Raheel also sought Kabul's help in order to extradite top Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan chief Mullah Fazalullah who is wanted for terrorism cases in Pakistan.

A day earlier, it had emerged that a Taliban commander Umar Naray masterminded the Peshawar attack from Afghanistan.

"His communications have been intercepted as well which helped security agencies in tracing his location and whereabouts which was urgently shared not only with the Afghan army but also with Nato forces," a security source said.

This is a positive approach from Pakistan. I am optimistic that Afghanistan will be in agreement. This should open doors for hot pursuit of all terrorists in the region as Pakistan will have to henceforth agree to joint Indo-Pak operations inside Pakistan.

Believe it or not I have seen many of my friends here in India crying while watching the Peshawar incident on TV. India has been truly shaken after the Mumbai attacks. There is a seething underlying anger. Let us forget our strategic games and work together I dont think both the nations will have the strength to bear another Peshawar incident.

If the information gathered regarding Peshawar carnage are correct Kabul is required to cooperate with Islamabad and hand over the wanted militant leader who are responsible for resorting deadly militancy in Pakistan killing scores of people. I hope our Afghan leaders are smart enough to not agree a one way agreement with Pakistan. If Pakistan wants to have hot pursuit rights in Afghanistan, I think Afghanistan should be able to have the same right to eliminate the terrorist hiding in Pakistan. Afghans are suffering for decades because of strategic depth policy of Pakistan and even now on daily basis people are dying. In the past 13 years Pakistan has played double game and deceived the Afghans and International community. They have only targeted those terror outfits, which were of no use for them. Even till recently Pakistan regarded Haqqani's as an asset. Afghan leaders should wait and see what Pakistan does through their actions and no longer should believe them on their word, like the past 13 years. Only then they should cooperate and fight a joint war against the terror.

This horrific tragedy should induce the government and the army to abandon the ill-advised policy of 'Strategic Depth' and adopt a different tack for reducing Indian influence in Afghanistan and improving relations with that country. Stop shielding Afghan Taliban who are using Pakistan as a base to launch attacks against Afghanistan and NATO forces; there are no good and bad Taliban, as the PM has proclaimed. They are all savages. In return demand the same from Afghanistan, i.e. action against the TTP commanders holed up there. Resort to terrorism is never a solution to any problem and must be fought by every government.

@Taimur "Attack Taliban hide outs in Afghanistan if they cannot do it themselves" And allow Afghanistan to do the same to Mullah Omar and his hired killers. And allow Iran to do the same to Jundullah and ASWJ. And allow India to do the same to LeT.

@NORI you need to remember, accusations do not make proof. The proof has to be such that the both parties are convinced. In the Bombay case, India did not allow Pakistan to interrogate the perpetrator and the evidence produced was here say, not irrefutable evidence. In Pakistans case, the Afghan intelligence, military and the president were convinced without doubt.

Afghan border security force must be raised now from scratch and should not be locals of the area. Border must be heavily land-mined, leaving only the official crossing points open. If the Afghan government doesn't support us now, we must cancel the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement and totally seal the border. Post snipers with orders to shoot to kill. Enough is enough.

The Mis·Chief·Vous Mullah Fazalullah should be eliminated immediately, by the Pakistan armed forces. It is now imperative and high time we used drones to crush the TTP criminal. Pakistan has the capability to use drones and can if necessary, take the help of CHINA. Even USA will readily help us, as soon as the Afghan President gives the Green Signal which is a must.

@Haroon First develop the kick then only kick. When your army is funded by the US how do you expect them to react in national interest. They attack you with drones. They track down their enemies within reach of a military academy and deal it without impunity. What capacity truly have you developed? An army is made from good Captains not loyal lieutenants.

Good step. Ask the Afghan President and NATO forces to handle this case or Pakistan might be forced to go inside Afghanistan. Understand that Pakistan does not want to step into Afghan's sovereign land but the precedent has already been set by world powers.

While we are all keen on taking action in Afghanistan, lets not forget that there are plenty of militant targets in Pakistan to take action against .... e.g. Lal Masjid, the Quetta Shura, etc. As is usual, we are looking to fix others, but we should start by fixing our own issues! I'm amazed that no on these posts seems to consider this an issue ....
