KARACHI, Jan 4: Off-spinner Atif Maqbool basked in glory with a match bag of 13 wickets to help Karachi Whites whip Abbottabad by an innings and 145 runs in their second-round Faysal Bank Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship match at the NBP Sports Complex here on Friday.

The 31-year-old bettered his first-innings figures of six for 60 with career-best seven for 59 runs and match haul of 13 for 119 in 39.2 overs as Abbottabad, trailing by a massive 313 runs on the first innings, stumbled to 168 all out in their second innings on the third day of the match to hand the Whites their first victory in the competition.

Atif’s grand performance never allowed the Abbottabad batsmen to settle down in either innings. Skipper Yasir Hameed, who was dismissed by slow left-armer Faraz Ahmed Khan, was the highest run-getter for the visiting team with 39 (49 balls, four boundaries) while wicket-keeper/batsman Mir Azam contributed 26 as Abbottabad’s second innings lasted 41.2 overs; in the first innings, they batted for 61.2 overs to make 146.

Earlier, the Whites’ overnight pair of Saeed bin Nasir and Fawad Alam negotiated 21 overs without being separated during which they added 95 to Thursday’s total of 364-3. Saeed scored 80 (139 balls, nine boundaries) and Fawad made 70 off 106 balls with the aid of five fours and one six; their unbroken partnership yielding 152 runs in only 124 minutes.

After falling behind 123 runs on the first innings, hosts Hyderabad put up a strong show to reach 232-3 against Rawalpindi at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad. Sharjeel Khan (32) and Azeem Ghumman (42) laid the platform with a solid opening partnership of 75.

Nauman Ali hit a breezy 35 off 44 balls before captain Aqeel Anjum (49 off 106 balls, eight boundaries) and Rizwan Ahmed (61 off 181 balls, six fours) added 102 for the unfinished fourth-wicket stand.

Rawalpindi, who resumed day three at 293-9, were all out for 302 with Adnan Mufti remaining undefeated on 67 (132 balls, six fours and one six) when last man Saad Altaf provided leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood his wicket of the innings.

Umair Khan completed a fine century to play a pivotal role in giving Islamabad a 128-run lead on the first innings against Lahore Ravi at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. The 27-year-old left-hander, who had reached 57 at stumps the evening before, was dismissed for 113 after batting five minutes over five hours as the hosts extended their Thursday’s score of 192-3 to 344-9.

Umair’s seventh three-figure knock in 71st first-class match was laced with 15 boundaries. Fahad Iqbal, the younger brother of Test discard Faisal, impressed with a composed 82 from 161 balls. The guest player from Karachi struck 10 fours, while partnership with Umair produced 197 runs for the fourth wicket.

Off-spinner Adnan Rasool, spoken highly as probably the logical replacement for Saeed Ajmal, claimed three for 72 in 30.2 overs, while paceman Imran Ali captured three wickets for 73 runs in 22 overs.

The second day of the Lahore Shalimar-Bahawalpur game at the LCCA Ground in Lahore saw no play at all because of inclement weather in the Punjab metropolis. The visitors were due to resume at 61-1.

After a completely blank first day at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan on Thursday, Quetta did well to post a respectable 210 in their first innings after Multan skipper Naved Yasin invited the visitors to bat first after winning the toss on the second day of this fixture.

Left-arm paceman Rahat Ali, who played a solitary One-day International at Pallekele without any success on the tour of Sri Lanka last July, was unplayable as Quetta found themselves in tatters at 94-6 with the 24-year-old Rahat taking three of the early wickets.

But a gutsy 44 (68 balls, four fours) from Jalat Khan helped Quetta cross the 200-run mark. Rahat ultimately ended up with four for 62 in 22 overs.

The hosts, in reply, faced just three deliveries when fading light forced umpires Ahsan Raza and Majid Hussain to call off play for the day.
