KARACHI: Sewerage line caves in

Published

KARACHI, March 30: A 54-inch dia sewerage line caved in late Tuesday night on I I Chundrigar Road near Railway Stadium, creating an eight-feet deep crater on the busy road and causing hindrance in the flow of traffic.

The vehicular traffic was seen moving at a snail’s pace on the portion of the road where the sewerage line had caved and the traffic police faced difficulties in managing the flow of traffic on the road.

KWSB chief engineer (Sewerage), Farid Soomro, told Dawn that the damaged plates of the caved in sewerage line had already been sent to workshop for their repair, and repairing of the line will begin on Thursday morning and will be completed the same evening.

He said the 54-inch sewerage line which passes through I I Chundrigar Road and links the Clifton pumping station had already outlived its life and it was for this reason that a substantial amount had been allocated for its replacement with a new sewerage line in the Tameer-i-Karachi Programme, commonly known as ‘Karachi Package’.

Though the damaged portion of the sewerage line might be repaired by Thursday, it will take another couple of days to undertake the levelling and carpeting work of the damaged portion of the road which means that flow of vehicular traffic on major thoroughfare will continue to disrupt traffic for another two or three days.

Motorists said they had to suffer delays on account of work on the main I I Chundrigar Road They said that the KWSB authorities should expedite the work and it be accomplished on day and night basis.
