LAHORE: Taking notice of the chaining of a suspect in Lakhoki police post (chowki), the Punjab police chief removed the Kahna Circle assistant superintendent of police (ASP) from his post and suspended the station house officer (SHO) from service, besides ordering registration of a case against two other officials for criminal negligence.
As per the notification issued by the inspector general of police (IGP), Kahna Circle ASP Agha Faseeh Rehman was transferred and directed to report to the Central Police Office (CPO).
In a separate notification issued by the Lahore Operations DIG, Kahna SHO Asad Abbas was placed under suspension.
According to a statement issued by the Punjab police spokesperson, the IGP conveyed a message to the police officers that he would not tolerate the complaints of misbehaviour with people at police stations.
Meanwhile, the operations DIG held the Kahna SHO and the police post in charge directly responsible for the incident due to their negligence and said they deserved to be punished harshly.
He said that action was initiated against the police officials after a video clip showed a chained man being kept at the police post.
During the inquiry, he says, it transpired that the man had been detained illegally for the last four days in blatant violation of the guidelines issued for handling the suspects in the police posts of Lahore.
The man detained illegally by the police was identified as Mukhtar and no case was found in the police record against him.
