RAWALPINDI: The city police officer (CPO) has decided to deploy additional personnel at 10 major intersections across the city to check traffic signal violations.
The CPO also offered to provide support to resolve issues of one-way violations and wrong parking.
CPO Syed Khalid Hamdani went into a session with traffic officers at the Police Lines Headquarters, reviewed the performance of the police and issued instructions to streamline the increasingly worsening traffic in the garrison city.
A spokesman for the CPO said in a press release that Mr Hamdani reviewed the performance of the traffic officers and offered them whatever support was required to resolve issues like one-way violations and illegal parking.
Offers support to streamline increasingly worsening traffic in garrison city
The CPO said additional personnel will be deployed at 10 major intersections across the city to take action against signal violations.
The CPO told the meeting that 396 cases were registered over encroachments, and claimed that encroachments had been eliminated from 864 places.
He said a crackdown should be carried out in collaboration with the district police against beggars.
He asked the traffic police to also take action against non-standard number plates and those driving motorcycles without helmets.
He said Google maps and 1,600 Safe City cameras were being used to monitor traffic flow in the city.
“With your hard work, loss of lives can be prevented and convenience can be provided to the citizens,” the CPO told the traffic police.
Special programmes, seminars and walks should be held on the radio to raise public awareness.
“The convenience of citizens and solution of traffic problems are very important,” he added.
On the other hand, residents of the garrison city have never been satisfied with the traffic police performance.
They say due to the deteriorating traffic situation, the CPO has now offered his assistance by providing extra personnel which meat the traffic police were not coming up to the public expectations as nobody was checking traffic violations.
A university professor said he travelled on Monday morning from DHA Phase II to a university in Islamabad via Committee Chowk and Kutchery Chowk, but saw no traffic police personnel. It appears as the city has no traffic police, he added.
