In 1989-90, when I was director-general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), some elements in the government wanted to sell Roosevelt Hotel, owned by the national airline, in New York. I was sent to conduct an enquiry into the matter along with the exchange of relatively new aircraft with Air Canada’s much older ones. In my report, I had strongly opposed the sale of the hotel, and I urge the decision-makers to stay away from any such proposal.

SUICIDE MENACE: The frequency of suicide among Pakistani students has been on the rise for some time. The situation is alarming. Many developed Asian countries have adopted methods to manage the issue in various ways. We have to come up with our own measures to prevent students from committing suicide.

IN PERSPECTIVE: This refers to the report “PMC abolition may deny ‘dream careers’ to medics” (Aug 29). The entire medical community had been protesting against the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and demanding the restoration of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), which has now happened. But it is imperative to remember why the PMDC had to be abolished. It was done because corruption, delays in licence issuance, lack of a website, and massive allegations of irregularities. Let us hope the PMDC will not repeat the mistakes made in the past.

PRIORITISING PROFIT: While people are generally trying to help the flood victims to the extent that they can, there are those busy making undue profit even during such hard times. People in Larkana are victims at the hands of such a mafia. Since the demand for plastic sheets for covering rooftops of mud houses during rains has increased, the price of the per-metre plastic sheet has rocketed to Rs300, which otherwise was Rs50. Prioritising profit over human lives and misery is utterly shameful.
