THERE is no denying that difference of opinion is a fundamental feature of democracy. It refers to freedom of expression which brings peace and prosperity in enlightened nations. Diverse opinions and healthy debates play a key role in producing intellectuals instead of pseudo intellectuals. Those who believe in it are history-makers.
Sadly, the recent political turmoil in Pakistan has messed up the situation and raised the level of intolerance and frustration among people. Instead of promoting healthy discussions, supporters of both sides brag about their leaders and want to hear just the good things about their respective parties. No nation can nurture productive ideas until it values healthy debate and respects the other opinion.
Pseudo intellectualism and imposing a person’s thinking on others lead to chaos and destruction. We need to take a deep breath and analyse its consequences. This aggression is going to take us nowhere. We need to think rationally, and hold gatherings to promote healthy discussions so people may learn the basic principles of tolerance and democracy. It will be a refreshing change for one and all.

URDU VERSUS ENGLISH: Despite being an independent nation, we are enslaved by the supposed superiority of the English language over Urdu, our national language. Disappointingly, even subject, like Islamiat and Pakistan Studies are taught in the English language. It is necessary to break this mould of perceived superiority. English holds great importance in the contemporary era, but we should not undermine our own national language.

HIDDEN ENEMIES: It is shocking that some elements claiming themselves to be overseas Pakistanis are propagating against the state of Pakistan and its institutions through social media platforms and rallies in their respective cities. There is a high probability that some enemies in disguise are fanning hatred and creating an impression that overseas Pakistanis are siding with hostile elements. The government must advise its embassies to remain vigilant.

EDUCATION FOR ALL: Sindh has announced the much-awaited educational policy for the transgender community. This is the first such policy and certainly a step in the right direction which will ensure that the community gets the basic right to education which would facilitate its integration into mainstream society. The community has faced discrimination, and such policy measures were long overdue.

VIOLENT GAMES: According to a research by American Psychological Association (APA), violent video games can worsen a person’s aggressive behaviour. As these video games are interactive, they are more harmful. Other studies have also linked behaviour issues with video games. People, especially students, should avoid games that incite violence and aggression. They should spend more time with their families and focus on their studies and other healthy activities.
