Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that Islamabad wants to learn from the progress and development of Malaysia and its leadership.
Imran Khan, who is on a two-day official visit of Malaysia, held a joint press conference with Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad and invited him to visit the country for next year's Pakistan Day celebrations, which fall on March 23.
Mahathir Mohammad accepted the invitation and said he will visit Pakistan in March. The Malaysian leader also said that the two sides have agreed to continue the bilateral dialogue process.

PM Khan said that the government wants to replicate the Malaysian model of good governance. Admiring Mahathir Mohammad, he said that the Malaysian leader has totally transformed the country, and raised the per capita income and Gross Development Product (GDP).
"Apart from trade and future cooperation, we are looking forward for Malaysian cooperation in the tourism sector," he said, adding that Pakistan has a number of tourists spots but no resorts.
He added that the newly formed government in Islamabad has found itself in a situation where it was facing "unprecedented debt". PM Khan said his government has the mandate to end corruption and he wants to learn from the Malaysian model to address the situation at home.
Earlier on Tuesday night, PM Imran Khan along with a delegation reached Kuala Lumpur. He was received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Minister in the PM Office of Government of Malaysia.
According to the official Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Twitter account, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Asad Umar, and Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood are also accompanying PM Khan.
PM Khan is the first head of state to visit the Southeast Asian country since Mahathir Mohammad became Malaysia's PM for a second time earlier this year, Radio Pakistan reported.
This is Imran Khan’s fourth official visit to any country after becoming prime minister. Before this, he has visited Saudi Arabia, China and the United Arab Emirates to seek bailout packages amid a mounting balance of payments crisis confronting Pakistan. It is also the last of the trio of planned foreign visits when the PM assumed the top office.
On Oct 18, PM Khan and Mahathir Mohamad had held a telephonic conversation in which the former had emphasised Pakistan’s need of close and cordial relations with Malaysia.
During the conversation with Mahathir Mohamad, PM Khan had expressed a desire to learn from their experiences, and also accepted the veteran leader’s invitation to visit Malaysia.

Best thing is start trade with India and bring prosperity to us. Enough of these far fetched ideas.
Only a few weeks back he wanted to replicate Chinese model. Is that another U-Turn?
Two great leaders in picture. Awesome sight
When in China he wants to implicate chinese model.Now in Malaysia, Malaysian model.How is it possible?
Respect.
Mahathir is 90 years old and best Malaysian leader ever
First thing Mahtir did was to cancel Chinese programs. Can IK even think of it?
Why copy ?? Every country is different and every country requires its own model that suits it? Did Malaysia copied someone else's model ??? Be wise PM
Three days ago you wanted to replicate Chinese model.What happened to that? This flattering will not help you to get loans.
Pm doing great.
Telling nice things about Xi and China did not bring any dollars. Anyway, no harm in trying. Mahathir is a tough nut.
When in china he wants to use china model, now in Malaysia, he wants to use Malaysia model. Y not Try to be a model for world?
I hope IK learn to review debt trapping Chinese investments like Malaysian PM
This is a good way of promoting ties within Islamic world. Enough of bowing to West. Long live Pakistan.
Great ,Pakistan is changing and moving towards success and right direction... Pakistan zindabad
Chinese model, Malaysian model ... no original thinking of one's own.
All you IK criticizers, at least he has a plan, we haven't had that in decades!!! NS and PPP get 3 terms each and IK has to take abuse after 3 months?? SO much for fairness...
How many models are you going to replicate, sir? First China, now Malaysia and next whichever country you will visit. Instead of replicating models of other countries try to develop your own model by learning from them.
Mr. IK, Bangladeshi model is most suitable. Why wasting time and money on searching model. First Chinese now Malaysian.
The first thing MR. Khan is supposed to do is to re-visit the CPEC Projects, the way mahathir had done.
GDP - Gross Domestic Product not Development
Keep your eyes open. Imran Khan will open bank accounts in Malaysia now. Malaysia will invest in key & strategic projects in Pakistan at a very subsidised rate. From no where loads of cash will appear in Imrans Malaysian bank accounts.
Mahatir has done wonders for Malysian economy in the past. Pak can learn a lot from this model.
Only MOU signed or some credits are coming.
PMIK just wants, still hasn’t done much in his 100 days office besides traveling.
Be sure whether IK like Chinese model, Malaysian model or any other model. You are all Pakistanis and work on Pakistani model.
Malaysia is a secular country and Pakistan isn’t secular. Straighten this difference.
How about a trip to Bangladesh to learn from them and seek financial assistance?
PM Khan can learn from a real statesman of this part of the world. Dr. Mahatir can not only give sound advice, but can help in Pakistans economy, only Imran Khan needs to focus on what he can offer.
In china Khan saheb told that we will follow chinese model of economy..in malaysia, says we will follow malaysian model...
dont replicate china,malayasia etc at one time,becaused it may confuse you alast,first reduced expenditure on big elephant,spend on modern education.
Malasia has maintained communal harmon and has controlled militar expenditure
@Chaman Bahar,
Keep your advice. China is our friend and the cooperation is transforming Pakistan. Please concentrate on your own country's problems. We do as we like.
Malaysia is laced with corruption, don’t understand what the PM is trying to learn from Dr. M?
West and East both are beautiful and that is good for humanity.
Good Job Pakistan.
Love to Malays, Tamils, Chinese the trios of Malaysia so beautiful you are Malaysia.
Salam, Vanakkam, Ni Hao Malaysia from Pakistan
IndoPakBangla Blood Brothers 4 Life!
Though a Muslim majority country, Malaysia follow Secularism.
The Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Finance Minister of Pakistan go to Malaysia. And they are received by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs?
Well done PM Imran Khan of the Islamic republic of Pakistan.
i remember him saying that he wanted to emulate the Chinese model....now he wants to replicate Malaysian model....come on IK get a grip ...
When we have decided for a Madina State model which is the best why to look at others, instead we should advise Malaysia to follow our model .
Let's see which model he ends up adopting
It's useful to develop cordial relations with Malaysia but would their model work for us. Given our prevailing conditions our leadership needs to develop indigenous multi pronged strategies with wider participation of politicians, experts and security institutions and then implement it with full speed and sincerity.
Look everywhere except the next door neighbor !!
just copy everything. Don't do anything by yourself.
Does he know the Malaysian model has failed miserably.
Good effort, but long way to go.
@Meer, Its not bad to copy good things, but Needs smartness.
Many of the South east asian countries developed fast due to one common reason . The work force in these countries are very disciplined , they do not show the emotions in destructive way. They just obey the rules. So any manufacturing industry find it easy to do the business.
This is not the case with South asian countries. It is not just political system that did the miracle.
Congratulations to Malaysia on their economic rise even though they were more behind than us at the time of independence. I have met many Malaysians around the world. They are quiet and hardworking but not very helpful people and only look out for themselves. So I doubt they will be very helpful to us.
Received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs? Why didn't they just send Uber?
Next, visit Turkey and emulate its model.
No two stories are exactlty same. IK will write great history of PK's prosperity.
Those people who learn from their mistakes and adopt new ideas and good things succeed in life. Likewise, any country that radicate corruption, have strong political, social and financial structure have much greater chance to be strong, independent and being well respected in the world. This is what we need, a honest and dedicated leader who care about nation and people and make decisions in favour of the country. Not like corrupt, dishonest and selfish politicians, who looted tax payers money for their self interests!
@Mohan , trying is not a bad thing. Whatever happens it happens for best.
Replicate in the sense cancel CPEC like Malaysia did.
Tomorrow he lands in Singapore and will say he wants to follow Singapore model.
We should imitate China than Malaysia but PMIK is doing a tremendous job of pm
@Fastrack, best reply. China is our blood brothers
From U turns we will soon be going in circles.
PM Khan in China intended to follow Chinese model. Now in Malaysia he intends to follow Malay model. He needs to make up his mind .
@Zahid, indeed true , all this is new to you . You guys are not used to it.
How many models and how many intentions while no action at all.
@Farhan, why your ex PMs Nawaz and Zardari were unable to do that? What the hell is wrong with you guys that you compare him with crooks
There's only one road to progress which is definitely very very difficult to follow . That is honesty in every matter. Truthfulness doesn't require any model to follow.
@Ashish, Will get the best from both sides. As simple as that.
More foreign trips. IK keeps taking U turns as soon as he reaches Pakistan from foreign trips. That’s why he is away from Pakistan all the time.
@Chinpaksaddique, becoming over emotional is your problem.
Excellent.
@Rashid , - MM was not a selected leader. He kept IMF and WB away.
When in Rome be like a Roman
@Komal S, you don’t learn just from one person but must learn from as many people as possible.
@Ashish, by learning best from both great nations.
@PrakashG, guess India has original idea? They are stuck with old British model.
How can Malaysia model be copied without palm oil and natural gas exports.
@Fastrack, we are worrying about our problems and have solved many of them. You see many of our problems come from or because of Pakistan. So we are minding our business and solving our problems.
@sammy, Most of the critics are from India.
Mr PM - Malaysia is minimizing Chinese interference in the country also Malaysia is friendly to India with lot of Indian origin people there.
The real motive is to seek aid from Malaysia All this is superficial lip service
I think ik talks without much analysis. Looks more like a confused and unplanned.
@Chinpaksaddique, Blood brothers ? China ? Not India.......
@biswajit, next door neighbor is not trust worthy.
Pakistan want to learn from China !! Islamabad intends to replicate Malaysian Model !! Great leader always makes U turn and so on....
Welcome to the club and the clubhouse. Keep it up and hang on tough.
But in reality....its the modi model that is being attempted
Leaders do not replicate but make own their way by giving their own vision to build the nation. It seems that Imran Khan is not prepared well and he has no practical roadmap. As he meets other leaders and asking for cooperation to replicate the other countries experiences in Pakistan. I don't think that may be workable in the context of Pakistan. What I suggest, take more time to understand our own root causes, prepare plan/vision according to Pakistan context and then fix it. Maybe he needs to emphasize human development, implementing the same laws for all, etc.
@Komal S, I think governments can learn from a few countries that have have done good in fighting corruption and replicate their systems.
Don't try to replicate the Malaysian system as it has many flaws, just fix the system you have got.
PM has said that the government wants to replicate the Malaysian model of good governance but the question is whether the PM has taken the right steps to introduce good governance by appointing the right people for the right jobs? The answer is in the negative. Time for PM to seriously think about the aggravating situation triggered by wrong decisions / appointments and how to reverse it as time is fast running out. This an honest opinion from a PTI supporter.
Mahathir does not want Malaysia to become another victim of China’s debt-trap diplomacy, which has threatened Sri Lanka’s sovereignty. Sri Lanka, unable to pay the huge debt to China, has recently handed over its strategically located Hambantota port to China under a 99-year lease arrangement. Kenya’s severe debt to China is now threatening to send its economy into an irreversible tailspin, with loan repayments to Chinese State-owned banks skyrocketing to mammoth proportions. The list of countries trapped in the Chinese debt has been expanding by the day
@Komal S, Imran will choose the best from every country which suites the Pakistan.
@Komal S, very sad indeed because you don't know nothing to replicate chines model that is poverty IK had said that and the Malaysian model mean the infrastructures
Khan shaheb is really confused which model he will replicate to transform Pakistan. But he can follow Bangladesh model.
But PMIK told he will follow Madina model.
In Malaysia, the Federal Government sits at Putrajaya, a Sanskrit name.
@Komal S, no one is perfect and you can learn good things from each model, learning from anyone is not a u turn but shows you are willing to adopt and change for the sake of your country's progress and prosperity
Work hard louder than words.
@Nawaz , pM will do great if left alone. He is the smartest person in the government
Few weeks ago, IK wanted to replicate China model in Pakistan, now with Malaysian. Looks he confused.
Malaysia is a wonderful place to live. Please make Pakistan like Malaysia.
I think he liked the Chinese model.
Remember Mahathir declined China's loan.....................and unviable project.
@Farhan, "Best thing is start trade with India and bring prosperity to us. Enough of these far fetched ideas."
No. Pakistan will do anthing but friendship with India.
To copy Chinese model means to copy the policies that suit Pakistan best and same goes for Malaysia... At least someone is trying.. one should respect the spirit ...
When in Rome, do as Romans do.
By Model, I think he is referring to someone who walks the ramp. Chinese Model, Malaysian Model, Saudi Model, UAE Model.
The best model is to invest in short and medium terms....such as in labour reforms, tax rehauling, focus on a handful of sectors. in medium term focus on technical skills of locals. Rest the businesses will take care and invest,
Pakistan needs to increase exports of high revenue yielding manufactured products like vehicles, construction & agricultural machinery, aircrafts, communication devices and softwares. Tourism and Mineral mining would also help Pakistan make a turn around on world stage as a strong economy.
@Farhan, : Teach this advise to the real rulers behind the curtain. The day they learn,Pakistan will prosper like an express train.
@Ashish, chinese model for eradication of corruption and poverty. Malaysian model for increasing tourism.
@Farhan, how trade with India will help Pak, you will simply again import like you import from China. Need is to enhance your capacity to export to other states...
@Komal S, I believe he will take the best parts from each country he visits. The chinese model was for fighting corruption I think.
@Pride,
If wishes were horses .
@amir_indian, you forgot Maldives.
Pakistan should have its own model for development. It cannot replicate Malaysia model as the latter is blessed with huge oil and gas reserves. The tax revenue and the dividend provided by state-owned Petronas significantly contributes to government revenue. This has help the country in infrastructure development and alleviation of poverty. The same cannot be done in Pakistan.
Progress of PM Mathir in 100 days after wining the election is fulfill only 2 promises made in election campaign rest never happened. This is the model IK applying in Pakistan.
Hope to get a Big package.
@Ashish, same when you compare things in five forces model but also do SWOT analysis.
@Pride, Tourism needs peaceful country. For manufacturing you will need cheap and skilled labor. Thin how to make progress for that.
@Sdatta, I also love Chinese model.
First, as they say, even copying needs capability. Second, is there anything common between the two in terms of socio-economic conditions; Malaysia refused IMF whereas even after others have promised multi-Million in assisstance, Pakistan keeps knocking at the IMF. Third, while it is good to know how others succeeded in achieving economic independence, will PTI leader succeed in convincing his opponents b/c w/o buy-in from all sections of society nothing good can come out. Lastly, if you do not know what ails your own society, no other model, system or strategy can work. Which system so far has not been tried here. All failed. Why? B/c of noncompliance, disobedience and gross violations, w/o consequences, by the same very people who promulgated SOPs, rules of business, law of the land, and more. Look at PTI 'a administration and it's modus operandi so far. Look inward where the problems are not outward b/c there is no compatibility with anyone, anyhow. Don't confuse already confused.
I am proud to have a leader in Imran Khan who loves Pakistan, a world class statesman, whose integrity and reputation precedes him around the world. Who is respected by other world leaders as a honest leader who puts the interest of Pakistan and the people of Pakistan first. To the negative Pakistanis out there I remind them of President Kennedy's quote "ask not what your country can do for you. ask what can you do for your country" we all know the challenges that our new government are facing; let's be part of the solution and not part of the problem. We must also play out part for the future of Pakistan. For it is our future and the future of our children.
@Satya, insensible comments
Which model Mr. Khan want implement in Pakistan, Malaysian, Chinese, Russian, Saudi or turkish or all.
Imran wants to replicate the Malaysian model... Chinese model, the Turkish model... I am starting to think we might end-up replicating no model after his five years are up.
@Pk, you got it..
Why are some people so jealous of our relations with Malaysia?
Not sure which model he wants to follow, but less foreign travel would save previous foreign exchange reserves.
U- Turn model of PM is the best.
Malaysian model , Chinese model or Medina model ?
Here we go again, as usual, all hired people who do not want Pakistan to prosper and become stronger and important player in the region are posting their negative views relating to PM Imran Khan and his positive initiatives to make our country great. I say to them -keep shedding your crocodile tears, as their wishes will be frutile.
@Komal S, Great Leader always takes U turns !
No single model will work for Pakistan as they are different people with a different mindset. They need to study several models that Include Indian model and then cherry pick that works for them. The only premise is that they must stop hostility towards India and think of business and slash army budget by one third. Have performance evaluation annually and make adjustments.
@Farhan, Yeah, but India has to be willing to talk trade, along with peace process, which starts with Kashmir, which, Modi has no desire. No peace talks, no trade.
How many foreign trips has IK made so far in the first 100 days?
What happened to austerity? His entourage is travelling in economy at least? Or was that also an election gimmick?
Change of system is not in your hand Mr. PM.
First it was to be Medina, then to replicate China and now it is Malaysia. Let us see where our PM will go now.
@Khan USA,
'Malaysian model , Chinese model or Medina model ?'
They all have one thing in common, accountability for the benefit of the people.
first saudi model and now malaysian model.
This is a good beginning. May it succeed.
@Farooq, And what model is that?
I wonder which next country he plans to visit for loan and replicate.
Ik, develop your own model rather than following others. Every region & country need to leverage their resources & strength.
First American model,then arab model then Chinese one and now Malaysian model.
because he don't have any model and don't have vision
@LAHORI KID, If you don't want to trade with India then keep looking for different model.
It looks like he is trying to use his cricketing field tactics of spin and fast bowling in politics. These unstable policies will not resolve Pakistan's real problem. Pakistan need a visionary leader to guide in right direction into a prosperous country. Prosperity can't be achieved by blending Chinese/Malaysian spin and fast bowling flavors.
@Satya, Not PM Imran you are talking about. Maybe some other Imran. But Mahathir is also not corrupt, so your imaginative think will remain a dream
@Raging Phoenix, he is saying the same thing.
I work on and off in Malaysia.Good people.But i will say that an average citizen is suffering badly.The economy has not picked up
So will IK scrap CPEC as per Malaysian model?
Imran must learn from Malaysia how to Push back China..
Since the PM Imran is visiting all majority Islamic countries for advice - the next countries on his itinerary will be Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
For ‘good’ advice, on how to stop corruption ... he will also visit Singapore, Hong Kong and ..... Panama...
Both Malaysia and China clamped hard on corruption and thus following their models should suite PK as well. Thought, the opposition my cry foul as such an approach could deprive them of the perks and privileges they have been using through corruption. A nice U Turn for the interest of Pakistan to get rid of corruption. Keep it up.
But he said to the Chinese the same that want to replicate Chinese model. So are these two models same or we are totally confused about what to do?
@Jamil khan, Atleast thar British model is working.
@biswajit, you are 100% right. Nothing will really change in South Asia until Pakistan and India develop mutual economic ties and open up trade and business .
Which model he wants to replicate, Chineses or Malaysian?
@Farhan, No thanks. We dont want trade with india when there are over 160 other countries in the world to trade with. If you like india so much you can go and trade yourself over to them!
Well, it is now evident that IK likes to embrace models from around the world.
@Ashish, Yes possible, by making a sharp U turn.
@Imran, : They recognized you and saw through you.
What about following the Turkish Model, our history is more similar to it ?
@Farhan, : Well stated. Both countries can prosper by cross-border trade but sadly that never happens.
But khan used to say the he has a complete plan for pakistan, during elections.
Best cordial relations to other countries will lead our country to the rout of progress.
Ease of doing business ratings from world bank! Malaysia ranked 24 Pakistan ranked 147 Big Difference!
@Farhan, hope your words become viral
Hope PM-IK do not get confused following several models.
You have to find your own model.
Pakistan supposedly makes/exports the best in sports equipment.
It was an Englishman who first had a football made in Pakistan, and over many decades has grown into a major industry.
Must look for the best practices in education, health care and industry and regulation and fashion what works for you,I guess.
@Zahid,
I see just one.
@Fastrack, You’re not in a position to tell anyone what to do.
@Good Man, - "When in Rome do as the Romans do' was what he learned in elementary school. He comes back home and forgets about it!
Pakistan and India should resolve the kashmir issue on an priority basis , and then get on with trade and nation building , this will be the single best factor that will bring immense development in both countries.
It’s not about adopting models , it’s about learning different models , and in the end doing what is best , that is the way.
@saif, Right!
@Ordinary, Which model is?
@Be good to all, Partly!
How about doing something PM promised, like END corruption. I think people will consider that as achievement. At least please do something instead of begging. We are hearing lot of vague statements, sometimes unreal and scary. Pakistan needs a modern industrial state and saved from the people who want to go back to middle ages.
Good Dream
