LHC forms election tribunals

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday formed tribunals to address the petitions filed by elections candidates in the aftermath of the July 25 polls.

Nine judges of the LHC circuit have been appointed to hear election-related disputes.

Four judges — including Justice Mamoonur Rasid Sheikh, Justice Tariq Abbasi, Justice Shahid Jameel Khan and Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal — will take the principle seats in the tribunals.

Three judges from the LHC's Multan bench will hear cases there. These include Justice Sardar Ahmed Naeem, Justice Mujahid Mustakeem Ahmed and Justice Tariq Iftikhar Ahmed.

Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti will be working as the election tribunal in Bahawalpur, while the Rawalpindi election tribunal will be run by Justice Mirza Waqas.

The tribunals were formed after LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali's approval

The 2018 General Elections in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan are already over. Consequently, barring few exceptions, the ECP in Islamabad has already issued a cumulative official list of the successful candidates both at the federal as well as provincial levels. Therefore, isn't it too late for the Lahore High Court to constitute election tribunals in anticipation of complaints to be filed by the losing candidates at this point in time?

I wish the judiciary was as active as this before the election. This institution needs to ensure right procedures are in place. We should all be happy to see a functioning justice system. I hope they continue to uphold the law.

"Nine judges of the LHC circuit have been appointed to hear election-related disputes" - What if the judges give 5-4 victory to PTI, PML(N) losers will go to supreme court and this soap opera will continue. Why do we have ECP, abolish it and let the judiciary take over? if we don't have any confidence in ECP and we can manage our election, might as well hand over the responsibility to UNO. Even then I doubt if the losers will agree with the results under UNO.

I wish LHC with the majority judgment in favor of PTI, would shut up these losers of PML(N) and rest of the opposition then we might have peace in the country.

@Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Is it not the duty of ECP to have in place elections tribunal, to hear appeals against any malfunction in the preforming it’s duty to carry out a free and fair election?

The courts have the power to look into any irregularities and decide. They are completely under the purview of their legal authorities.
