MULTAN: A court on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to the Federal Investigation Agency deputy director for not initiating a probe into matter pertaining to the necklace of Turkish First Lady, involving ex-premier Yousuf Raza Gilani and his wife and not submitting a reply.

The notice has been issued by Additional Sessions Judge Bakhat Fakhar Behzad to the FIA deputy director for violation of a court direction.

The judge had directed the FIA official on June 22 to consider a petition filed by Javed Iqbal, a resident of Kot Addu, as a complaint and conduct a probe in accordance with the FIA (Inquires and Investigations) Rules 2002 and submit a report to the court on June 29.

On June 29, an FIA official informed the court that the accused was a former prime minister and the department needed time to get instruction from the interior secretary over the issue. The court had fixed July 22 as the next hearing date.

The petition was filed with Justice of Peace against federal interior secretary, FIA director general, FIA`s Punjab director, its Multan deputy director, former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and his wife Fauzia Gilani through counsel Fahim Akhtar Gill.

It accused the former premier and his wife of embezzling the necklace donated by the Turkish First Lady to flood victims in Mehmood Kot in 2010.

The petitioner said that he contacted the FIA for lodging the case against former prime minister and his wife but the agency was reluctant to do so.

He requested the court to direct FIA to lodge the case and recover the missing necklace.

“On behalf of my client, an application was also submitted in the court with the request for the lodging of FIR against Deputy Director FIA Multan under section 5(2)47 of Prevention of Corruption Act as the court orders were violated,” Advocate Gill told Dawn.

He said the court should directed the FIA authorities to submit para-wise comments over the application.
