Punjab Food Authority declares various cooking oil, ghee brands unfit for consumption

Punjab Food Authority (PFA) declared various cooking oil and ghee brands unfit for human consumption due to absences of Vitamin A and rancidity, artificial flavour addition and other acid values, read a public notice issued by the authority on November 27.

The authority declared the brands unfit after examining the samples which were collected during a survey in the process, said a statement issued by PFA.

Various brands which were declared unfit for consumption due to absence of Vitamin A and low saponification include Shan Cooking Oil, Shan Banaspati, Soya Supreme Cooking Oil and five other brands.

Meanwhile, the brands which were declared unfit due to rancidity and addition of artificial flavor include Tullo Banaspati, Tullo Cooking Oil, Soya Supreme Banaspati, Kisan Vegetable ghee, Smart Canola Cooking Oil, Ghani Cooking Oil and eight other brands.

@The end is near Be it (family party) democracy or military dictatorship: the basic system of governance remains the same. It is time to say good bye to this system and implement a true Islamic system which works for every citizen regardless of ethnicity and religion. If not, then you will look back to the good old days when "only" 80% of the people were forced to drink contaminated water.

O My God! I have always advocated the use of Dalda, Eva cooling oil at home but they stress Sufi is the best and unfortunately it is also included in the list. :(

I used to fight with my Dad that why he does he process butter extracted Desi Ghe over processed oil and he used to tell me that they were all liars and there was not authority for check and balance. He was so right and I was so wrong.

We have started using desi ghee and butter from last 10 years and will channel the same tradition our next generation. In the absence of any check and balance it impossible to guess what are the contents in a tin pack

These are big brands. We have all been using one or the other. If these are unfit, they need to force production to become proper or impose heavy fines to get the manufacturers to correct the problem. Not just issue a newspaper circular !

In Norway the goverment have strict control with cooking oils. Recently the focus here have been on banning all use of Palm oil in food items which is causing swift rise in colestrol and causes more trouble in body then other cooking oils. I am surprised that nobody in Pakistan is aware of the bad impact of palm oil use is.

1. There needs to be transparency here. All the results of the different tests performed should be available for both the public and the companies concerned on the food authority website. 2. There should be a method of appeal and clarification for the product/company. 3. If the results are proven valid then the product should be withdrawn from market. What is the use of these public notices if none of the above happens? We need result oriented behaviour and not just fancy "raids" and "alerts"

Nothing new here, everything produced in Pakistan (as in manufactured) is substandard due to poor processing, adulteration or other reasons. That is why these products can only be sold in Pakistan to poor unsuspecting public and some african countries.
