Print spooler

QHow can I get my print spooler system up and running because it says it is on automatic and when I try to install my Deskjet printer F4185, it says that the print spooler system is not running and then asks to fix it. When I try to fix it, I am told there was an error. What should I do?

AYou can start the print spooler using the following procedure

In the Administrative Tools folder (click Start, then Control Panel, then System and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools), open the Services snap-in.
Locate the Print Spooler service in the list of services and confirm that the status is 'Started'. If it is not, select the service and on the 'Action' menu, click Start.
You can also go to Start> Run > CMD and press Enter, then type 'net start spooler'. For further trouble shooting as to why it is not auto running, go to Start> Control Panel (in classic view) > administrative tools > services, in there you will find print spooler, make sure that service is set to automatically run, you can also start the service from there and if it cannot run it will give you the error as to why.
In some instances, you might receive an error, Error 1068, “The dependency service or group failed to start” when attempting to start the print spooler. This can happen if print spooler relies on other services which are not running. To resolve this issue, use the following procedure In Services, right-click Print Spooler and then click Properties.
Click the Dependencies tab. The first box lists all the system services that must be running for the print spooler to start. These are the dependencies.
Make a note of each service, click OK and then start each service upon which the print spooler is dependent, if the
service is not already started. If a service was not started, right click it, click Properties and then confirm that the Start-up type is Automatic.
Try also updating the drivers you are installing to your system. Also, ensure that if you are using Vista, to disable UAC (Control Panel > User Accounts). I hope that this helps.

Physical memory dumping

QI recently bought an extra 160 GB hard disk and 1 GB Ram and installed them on my PC along with the already present hard disk and Ram. From then on, my computer has started crashing into a blue screen and a message appears at the bottom saying, “Physical Memory Dumping Started”. Nothing happens until I restart the PC. It happens after every three or four days. My Rams are of two different companies, but are both DDR II. Can you please explain this issue?

AYou would be surprised to learn that 95 per cent of the time, this error is caused by 'Bad Memory'.
I would suggest you take some from a friend's PC and test it out and see if you get the same problem. It could be a number of things included damaged Ram, but I would suggest you to check your memory sticks are seated correctly first.
Open up the case and make sure the memory sticks are pushed in firmly. You might also want to run a test on your memory from one of the many test utilities around like  HYPERLINK "http//oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp" http//oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp or HYPERLINK "http//hcidesign.com/memtest/" http//hcidesign.com/memtest/.
If you are sure, that your system's memory is fine, check your hard disk for errors and ensure that you have not installed any new software which might be causing this problem.
With regard to your query, even though both your Ram sticks are DDR II, it might be that both have different speeds, which might cause problems. Usually it is best to get the same speed and brand of the Ram for your system.

Virus attack

QYour solution about “TASK MANAGER DISABLED” was very useful.
Now the problem is that I installed licensed Window XP on my computer, but some virus has attacked and the 'Search' utility has disappeared from the Start menu. What can I retrieve it?

ATo enable Search again, type regedit in Run and go to;[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer] ensure that “NoFind”=dword00000000 This will bring it back.
Laptop  loops

QYour answer does not resolve my problems. My laptop came with a recovery and drivers CD for XP Home Edition. When inserted, it auto detects all the hardware that is installed, and then recommends and installs driver for it.
Secondly, the Dell support link you wrote about indicates that the drivers for XP Home and Pro are the same (which I already have on my CD). Same goes for the graphics chipset driver from intel.com.

AI suggest you should not install Pro on a Laptop designed for XP Home. You cannot actually change your OS on laptop without encountering problems. I know, I had a x64 Vista on my HP and had to downgrade to X86. It keeps crashing for no reason.
I regret my error, I said Windows XP home edition CD when I should have said, that you do not have the Windows XP Pro Edition CD.

Multiple Queries

QI am using a HTC touch mobile with Maxthon browser on it and share internet via LAN.
1. How can I increase the speed of the internet?
2. Which browser is better to use?
3. I have an Intel core 2 quad Q6600,1GB Ram, 320GB HDD,MSI p45 neo 3 (motherboard) and NVIDIA 9800gt with XP Sp2. How can I over-clock it and the graphic card?

AYour GPRS/EDGE connection speed depends on a lot of factors. First of all, the network condition is important. To understand this, you will have to understand how data is sent to a mobile network. Mobile GSM networks depend on transferring voice and data through time slots. Time slots are the available channels through which voice/data can be sent. A base station usually has eight available time slots through which people connect for both voice and data. While you need one time slot for voice only, you can bundle this time slots for data.

So, theoretically, under the best of conditions you could get eight time slots which would mean no one else attached to the same base station will be able to make a phone call anymore because you use all the available bandwidth. So the operators implement between 1-4 time slots for data only.

Secondly, time slots are used dynamically. This means that during the night you might get all four time slots for GPRS, while in the afternoon you will only get one timeslot for this purpose. This means higher rates in the evening/night but not in the morning.

So the answer your question is 'It depends'.
Connection speeds really depends on the strength of the signal, the number of users in the channel and the type of device that you have. Many old devices cannot connect to more than two time slots at one go. The newer ones (also called Class 12 devices) connect to all eight simultaneously. For example, HTC Touch is a Class 10 device which supports four time slots for downloading data and two slots for uploading but supports a maximum of five slots to be used simultaneously. This means a 4 + 1 or 3 + 2 GPRS connection.

For your comfort, do know that most users get between 25-40 KBPS on GPRS while with EDGE, speeds go up to 115-165 KBPS. These are not even close to the advertised maximum speeds of 384 KBPS.

If you would like a better wireless solution, you can look into the EVDO service launched by a telecom company lately. It is a lot more expensive than GPRS/Edge. However, you will get the speeds that you are paying for.
2. I prefer the Opera Browser for my mobile surfing. Get the Pocket PC Version from http//www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/ and even for my normal surfing, I prefer Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or Googles Chrome. You can get either one from www.firefox.com or www.google.com/chrome.
3. Over-clocking is a delicate matter and not something which can be explained in our limited space. What I would recommend is that you watch this video at http//video.google.com/videoplay?docid=506873430516227655 to understand what is 'Over-clocking' and read the articles at http//www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1804, http//www.overclock.net/. These are all beginner articles, which will help you to decide whether you want to risk burning up your equipment or not. Do remember, over-clocking is less of what you have, than what you know.
