RAWALPINDI, Sept 30: Police probing into the biggest burglary in Sarafa Bazaar arrested the younger son of the victim goldsmith who confessed to the crime.

Imran Ahmed, son of goldsmith Anwar Ahmed alias Dada Anwar, confessed to having stolen the Rs120 million worth of jewellery and cash which had already been found lying on the rooftop of the workshop. He also acknowledged making the phone call to the police which led to the recovery of the loot.

This was stated by Superintendent of Police Rawal Town Malik Matloob Ahmed while briefing mediapersons at the Waris Khan police station on Firday.

The SP said: “Imran Ahmed started weeping and making apology when the police investigators put the data of his cellphone calls before him. He had no other choice but to confess to the crime.”

Quoting the accused, the SP said he had exaggerated the value of the stolen jewellery, diamond and cash on the instructions of the union members because they believed that the total stolen goods had not been recovered by the police. The SP said legal proceedings against the jewellers community would be launched only after a report being prepared by the DSP legal was received.

A mystery call to police on Wednesday helped them find the stolen diamond, gold ornaments and cash. The call was made from the cellphone being used by Imran Ahmed.

The police got the data of calls made from the cellphone and captured the caller who turned out to be the younger son of Anwar Ahmed. During investigation, he said his elder brother’s living style and earning prompted him to commit the crime to get more money overnight. But he never knew that this would land him behind bars.

Giving details of the recovered items, the SP said it included diamond jewellery, gold ornaments weighing over 4kg and Rs20,290 in cash.—Staff Reporter
