IN the wake of terrorism engulfing Karachi lately, another bomb blast shook the city early Monday morning. One wonders why terrorists are successful every single time and not even once have they been deferred. Even if you analyse this particular incident, it doesn’t take a genius to understand that the owner of the used vehicle can or should be traced by the licence plate number.

If the vehicle had been stolen, it must have been reported. If it was reported, it should’ve been on the city police’s list to look out for on the streets, especially when nothing should be taken lightly during these times. Assuming the vehicle wasn’t parked next door to the SSP CID, it must have travelled some distance to get to its target. It must have passed in front of several policemen before it reached its destination.

Such is the story of every single bomb blast in the country. Why are the police not vigilant enough to be on the lookout for stolen vehicles on the streets? If checking pilion-riders on every corner was the answer to our problems, we would’ve been the safest nation ever. Why don’t the authorities actually take serious measures to stop this chaos? What exactly are we waiting for?

High-tech cameras

WHAT happened on Sept 19 at the residence of SSP Chauhdry Aslam has once again put a question mark on the working of our LEAs and intelligence agencies. The point that arises here is that though our intelligence agencies had reasonable information prior to this attack, why did they fail to ward it off?

According to Rehman Malik, he had the information that certain Muslim consulates, intelligence agencies’ offices and some other sensitive places, along with VIPs, could be targeted. What did he do to avoid all this? Did he just inform his subordinates and ask them to search every single vehicle and every individual on the road and that’s it? He must explain this to the nation for being in charge of security affairs.

Apart from this, it is suggested to Mr Malik to start investing in high-tech cameras and sensors that can detect explosives instead of only disseminating the information that he gets as it is humanly impossible to frisk all the vehicles in any city to stop terrorist activities.
