Man gunned down

CHAKWAL, June 25: A man was gunned down on Saturday after he told the highwaymen to earn livelihood through fair means, police said.

Qari Mohammad Banaras, a resident of Joya Mire village, was going home along with his son, Mohammad Idrees, on motorbike. When the father and the son were passing by Joya Mire Oilfield, three highwaymen stopped them.

The armed bandits snatched Rs5,000 from them. When the robbers were leaving, Banaras asked them to earn their livelihood by fair and just means.

At this the enraged highwaymen opened fire on Banaras, killing him on the spot. They would have killed the son also but, according to a villager, the gun developed a “technical fault”. Saddar police have registered a case against the culprits. — Correspondent

Robbers remanded

ATTOCK, June 25: Three robbers including a woman allegedly involved in snatching a taxi and murdering the driver were remanded in police custody for 10 days by the judicial magistrate here on Saturday.

Hazro police arrested three accused robbers Shagufta Bibi, Mohammad Usman, residents of Hazro and Attaullah, resident of Mohmand Agency as they reportedly snatched a taxi (RIZ-3590) near Yaseen village after killing driver Mohammad Arshad, resident of Pindwal village, Attock. The preliminary interrogation disclosed that the accused robbers had sold the lifted vehicle to Habibullah, resident of Mardan for Rs55,000, sources said. On the disclosure, the police had also arrested the accused purchaser of the vehicle. —Correspondent

PAL honours four poets

ISLAMABAD, June 25: Sheikh Ayaz, Meer Gul Khan Naseer, Ameer Hamza Khan Shinwari and Ahmed Rahi are hallmarks of our modern poetry and symbol of our national progressive spirit.

This was said by Fakhar Zaman, the chairman of Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL), during a briefing on the release of special issue of quarterly Adbiyat: ‘Four Important poets of Pakistani languages: Sheikh Ayaz, Meer Gul Khan Naseer, Ameer Hamza Khan Shinwari and Ahmed Rahi.’

He said the purpose of the special issue was to strengthen the culture of democracy, progressive approach, peace and brotherhood in society through highlighting the poetry of these four progressive poets. — A Reporter

13 injured in accident

ATTOCK, June 25: As many as 13 persons including eight women were seriously injured in a road accident on Friday evening. Police said that an Attock bound wagon collided with a coach coming from the opposite direction at Attock-Fatehjang Road on Friday evening due to over speeding.

As a result, 13 passengers of both the vehicles including eight women Abida Bibi, Aroma Tariq, Najamul Sehar, Nasreen, Seema Gull, Afsana Javed and Yasmeen Akhtar, residents of Fatehjang sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the THQ hospital. — Correspondent
