LIVERPOOL: Manchester City silenced a hostile Anfield crowd as second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki secured a 3-0 victory over 10-man Liverpool on Sunday and maintained the Premier League leaders’ perfect start to the season.
City were playing for the first time since an independent commission found them guilty of 114 breaches of the league’s financial rules, and were greeted by deafening boos and angry chants.
But Enzo Maresca’s side stood firm against Liverpool’s early pressure and a fevered atmosphere before taking control after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute for a second booking following a foul on Doku.
Haaland then struck three minutes later, smashing a left-footed shot past Alisson after Doku worked the ball into the box and his attempted shot was deflected into the path of the big Norwegian.
Doku doubled the lead in the 68th minute with a gorgeous long-range shot that curled into the far top corner. Cherki completed the rout in the 78th minute when he let the ball roll through to Josko Gvardiol before turning into the box to meet his teammate’s pass and slot the ball home.
The victory gave City six wins from six and moved them three points clear of Arsenal on 18 points, providing a forceful response on the pitch after a turbulent week away from it. Liverpool are ninth after their first league loss of the season.
Earlier, Nottingham Forest boss Oliver Glasner was beaten on his return to Crystal Palace as Daichi Kamada’s first Premier League goal inspired the Eagles’ 3-1 win on Sunday.
He was greeted warmly by Palace fans before kick-off and it looked like being a victorious return for Glasner when Forest’s Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the third minute.
But Forest wasted a host of chances to increase their lead and Japan midfielder Kamada levelled in the 41st minute to end his long wait for a top-flight goal.
Jefferson Lerma nodded Palace in front in first-half stoppage time and Yeremy Pino’s 59th-minute goal sent Glasner home empty-handed.
Forest sit in 14th place, with Palace climbing above them into 12th.
Hull extended their unbeaten home record since returning to the Premier League with a 2-2 draw against Everton at the MKM Stadium.
Joe Gelhardt opened the scoring for Hull in the 48th minute following an error by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalised seven minutes later, with Thierno Barry putting Everton ahead in the 68th minute.
Hull responded swiftly as substitute Mohamed Belloumi levelled in the 74th minute.
Fifth-placed Everton remain unbeaten in six league games, while ninth-placed Hull have lost just one of their six matches since earning promotion last season.
Late on Saturday, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur played a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Bryan Mbeumo scored against the run of play before Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for head-butting Luke Shaw, leaving United fans daring to dream of a much-needed victory, only for Solanke’s 92nd-minute header to puncture the mood at Old Trafford.
