KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced a Rs14 billion road rehabilitation programme under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) that will cover 139 roads across all districts of the city.

The development programme includes the reconstruction and rehabilitation of major roads, drainage infrastructure, water supply lines and street lighting. According to KMC, the projects are aimed at improving Karachi’s infrastructure and municipal services.

The announcement was made during a high-level review meeting at the KMC Head Office, where the mayor said the city was entering “a new era of development” after years of neglect.

“The people of Karachi deserve quality infrastructure and better municipal services. These projects are not merely about constructing roads; they are about restoring public confidence and giving citizens the Karachi they rightfully deserve,” a statement issued by the KMC quoted Mayor Wahab as saying.

The mayor said the Sindh government had extended full support to KMC for carrying out large-scale development projects. The rehabilitation drive was part of the city’s broader development plan to improve roads, drainage and public facilities, he added. He directed all departments to ensure transparency, quality and timely completion of the schemes, saying he would personally monitor both the procurement process and execution of the projects.

“I will personally supervise the progress of these schemes to ensure quality construction, transparency and timely completion. We will not compromise on standards,” the mayor said.

During the meeting, Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal informed participants that the tendering process for civil works, including road rehabilitation, drainage improvement, water supply lines and electrical infrastructure, had been completed in accordance with procurement rules. He said work orders would be issued shortly and construction would begin in phases across the city.
