Lyari and the World Cup rollercoaster

Published Updated

THIS is with reference to the photo feature ‘Football frenzy at fever pitch in Lyari’ (Dawn.Com; June 30), which captured scenes from a live screening of the FIFA World Cup matches at the Lyari International Football Stadium. The attendance in the stadium in the dead of the night was amazing. Whenever the World Cup arrives, the streets of Lyari transform into a grand festival. Homes, markets and playgrounds are decorated with flags, while thousands of football lovers gather to celebrate the sport that has become a part of their identity.

These celebrations are more than just support for international teams; they reflect the passion, talent and dreams of Lyari’s youth.

Despite limited facilities and resources, generations of young players have kept the spirit of football alive. Their dedication deserves national recognition and support.

The government and relevant sports authorities should take advantage of this passion by establishing modern football academies, improving playgrounds, and creating opportunities for talented players to represent Pakistan at higher levels. The people of Lyari do not merely watch football — they live football. It is time this passion received the attention and investment that it truly deserves.
