LAHORE: Pakistan will field a contingent of 36 members, including officials, coaches and athletes, in the 23rd Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to Aug 2, the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) announced on Thursday.
According to the POA media release, Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games will compete only in six disciplines including athletics in which Olympic record-holding gold medallist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem is the only prominent contestant for the country.
Other disciplines in which Pakistan will compete include boxing, judo, gymnastics, lawn bowl and swimming. The contingent will leave for Glasgow from Islamabad in two batches, with the first leaving on July 20 followed by the second the next day.
The athletics’ squad, however, will leave on July 24. Arshad and his coach Salman Iqbal Butt will join the Pakistan contingent directly from Switzerland, where they will be featuring in an international athletics contest prior to the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, the POA, in its media release, thanked the government and the national federations concerned for their support in providing funds for preparation and participation of the Pakistan athletes in the Commonwealth Games.
