KARACHI: Two suspect robbers were shot dead in an alleged encounter on Tipu Sultan Road on Monday, police said.
They said that a police team signalled two suspected street criminals on Tipu Sultan Road, but they started firing. In an ensuing exchange of gunfire, both of them suffered bullet wounds and arrested.
They were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
The police identified the deceased as Riaz Mehmood and Mohammed Waqas and claimed that they were habitual criminals.
They said that Riaz was booked in 22 cases while Waqas was nominated in nine FIRs.
The police claimed to have recovered two unlicensed pistols, mobile phones, cash and one motorcycle from their custody.
Three ‘extortionists’ held
Three suspected extortionists were arrested in wounded condition after an alleged encounter in the Garden area on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Sindh Rangers and Special Investigation Unit conducted a raid near Kashti Masjid. During the action, the criminals resorted to firing and law enforcers returned fire.
A Rangers spokesperson said in a statement that three suspects — Syed Basit Husain alias Shah Rukh, Abdul Samad and Mohammed Taha alias Maya — were arrested in wounded condition.
The held suspects were affiliated with extortion gangs led by Wasiullah Lakho, Jameel Changa and Abdul Samad Kathiawari, said the statement.
It said they gave information to their ringleaders about private business owners and carried out firing at their establishments in case of non-payment of protection money.
