LAHORE: Academic and writer Prof Razi Abedi passed away after a protracted illness here on Saturday. He was 92.

Razi Abedi was born on Jan 31, 1933, in Sonipat, Haryana, India, and migrated with his family to Pakistan at the time of the Partition. After the death of his father, he joined the AG office in 1947 and later worked as a telephone operator. However, he continued his education despite all odds. He completed his graduation in science and later opted for literature, and did his MA in English Literature from Punjab University. In 1968, he went to England for higher studies and attained M.A. and Tripos from Cambridge University in 1969. He taught English literature at Punjab University, Lahore, and served as its chairman. After his retirement, he kept teaching at MAO College as well as FC College. His books include The Tragic Vision, Maghrabi Drama Aur Jadeed Adabi Tehreekein, Teesri Dunya Ka Adab, Educational Chaos, The Search for the Medium, and Achhoot Logon Ka Adab that he co-authored with Dr Mubarak Ali. His autobiography was titled Bazaar Ki Raunaq.

Prof Abedi had health issues for quite some time and was bedridden. Recently, he developed breathing issues and breathed his last on Saturday. Funeral prayers for him were offered at the Punjab University Housing Society and Mominpura Graveyard where he was laid to rest. He left behind a widow, two sons and a daughter.
