LAHORE: A peon of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) on Thursday committed suicide by jumping into the BRB Canal apparently due to financial and domestic issues.

Father of five, Muhammad Khalid had not been paid salary for the last three months like his other colleagues working at the bar.

His colleague said Khalid was unable to pay his utility bills and no one was helping him. He was surviving on borrowed groceries and loans from shops for quite some time, leading to frequent arguments at home. His wife had also left him.

“However, he did not give any indication of taking this extreme step,” said a colleague of Khalid who performed duty with him on Wednesday.

Working at the LHCBA for 25 years, Khalid was living in a rented house.

A team of Rescue 1122 recovered the body of the peon from the canal and shifted to the Mayo Hospital mortuary.
