CHITRAL: A young man saved a college girl from drowning when she jumped into Chitral River from Chowni Bridge in Jughoor village to end her life here on Wednesday morning.

City police station SHO Munirul Mulk told Dawn that the dejected girl from Jughoor village jumped into the river to commit suicide. He said that Mazhar, a young man from her village, also jumped into the river and saved her life.

He said that the girl was rushed to hospital for first aid. She had sustained injuries and was discharged after initial treatment.

Regarding the immediate reason of her suicide attempt, the police officer said that as per initial inquiry, the girl was dejected over the decision of her parents about her marriage against her will.

He said that no case was instituted against the girl for her suicide attempt as the relevant section (325) was deleted from Pakistan Penal Code.

Three months earlier, another college girl had jumped into the river from the same point on the bridge but she could not be saved. Reason of her suicide was also stated to be marriage against her will.

Meanwhile, police arrested three proclaimed offenders in the border village of Arandu. They were wanted by police both in Chitral and Upper Dir in many heinous crimes including murder.

The district police officer, Iftikhar Shah, said that the arrested men were identified as Mohammad Ishaq of Lachigram Damel and Shiekh Zahid and Khan Tahseen of Zareen Bagh Damel.

He said that the proclaimed offenders had fled to Kunar province of Afghanistan after committing crimes.
