LAHORE: The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) on Wednesday outlined a plan to revamp the first Butterfly House at Jallo Park’s botanical garden.

The unique butterfly aviary, which was initially inaugurated in 2015, covers 16,500 square feet and is home to approximately 50 different species, including some exotic varieties.

PHA Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo presided over a meeting to discuss the enhancement of this valuable asset. The focus of the meeting was to make a feasibility report that would explore ways to attract tourists and educate the public about these vibrant creatures.

According to a PHA spokesperson, the authority had originally cultivated thousands of plants within the facility to create a natural environment for the butterflies.

Mr. Wattoo underscored the importance of completing necessary engineering work, such as roof maintenance, dome care, and chiller upkeep, to provide an ideal natural habitat for the growth of butterflies.

The meeting also addressed plans to enhance the visual aesthetics of Lahore. The horticulture directors were instructed to increase the number of planters and flower beds in various areas, including The Mall, Wahdat Road, Ferozepur Road, and Gulberg. Furthermore, the repair of old planters around Azadi Chowk was also ordered.

In a separate directive, field staffers were instructed to install missing lights around walking tracks in major parks and ensure their maintenance. Play areas and swings were to be properly looked after to transform parks into popular picnic spots.

Previously, Mr. Wattoo chaired a meeting focusing on smog control and city’s beautification, where he was briefed about the installation of greenbelts in all city parks and squares.

The DG inspected various areas in the city and expressed concern over the condition of some greenbelts. He instructed their improvement.
